The best book ever
Wow . I could spend months absorbing information from this book. it is a masterpiece . A Must have for anyone with a serious interest in Timber framing. The only book I've found that talks in depth about timber frame joinery. Makes me want to sign up at Fox-Maple workshop right away. The only complaint I have is the book could be re edited so the pictures fit the ideas on the pages better. still think it's a great book though.

I own nearly every such book on the craft and have dabbled in designing, cutting and building nearly 10 structures thus far. I now wish I had purchased this one sooner. Although Sobon and Benson had been my guideposts, Chappell is now among them on equal footing. There is a treasure trove of information in the book and it takes you to places many other books neglect. It has everything you need to know to get started and much of what you need to know to become very good. The only thing the book doesn't provide is your own personal experience of learning from your mistakes, but that book can only be found in the library of the School of Hard Knocks. I consider this book to be one of three primary "Go-To" books on the subject so do yourself a favor and order it before you get very far in exploring this craft.

The goto book for traditional timber framing.
I've just completed the spring 2017 introductory and advanced timber framing workshops (35 anniversary year of the workshops) run by Steve Chappell, the author of this book. This book gave me the confidence I needed to undertake this adventure that involved traveling to the other side of the world just to agenda his workshops. Having traveled from Australia to attended these workshops, that's saying something. I've brought this book about 3 years ago along with another 4 books by other authors on traditional timber framing. While the others I look at occasionally, I've read "A Timber Framing Workshop" more than 5 times over and am constantly referring to it. It is my go to book on timber framing. Good content, poor book quality
The book content is great, well written. However the book is poorly made and will begin to fall apart quickly. Not ideal for a book I would no doubt reference for years to come.

One can sense the author's passion and knowledge ....
A thoroughly enjoyable and compelling read for anyone interested in the design, building and engineering science of basic traditional Timber Frame construction. I especially liked that the book felt personal; one can sense the author's passion and knowledge for the old craft of hewing and joining timbers into beautiful and timeless buildings. How practical it is to build Timber Fame structures using the techniques described in the book in a world more focused on expediency and economics is, as they say, in the eye of the beholder. Reading about it in the way that the author presents, however, gives you the opportunity to make informed decisions of whether to use a parallam or a Tie Beam or a hammerbeam truss for a particular application. Very enjoyable reading style. Only regret: no Kindle version.

One of the best timber frame resources out there.
I have quite few timber framing book. Most of them have pretty much all the same stuff. This one has quite a few extra stuff or a bit more detail in areas I had more questions in. If I had to only use 2 of the book I have on the subject this would be one and the other would be The Timber-Frame Home: Design, Construction, Finishing by Ted Benson which does the best of talking about the required details other than just the timber shaping and assembling.

Helpful so far!
Weโre building a barnโฆ timber framing is new to us though construction isnโt. Lots of helpful information so farโฆ especially the images. Sometimes a book is just way better than online how-to videos. Lots of helpful details here!

Teach someone to timber frame with this book
This book is informative and detailed, it not only teaches timber framing, it goes into tools needed, measurements and everything needed to teach someone the skill of timber framing. I am looking to purchase property and plan on building a timber frame home with the knowledge I have obtained from this book.

Very detailed
To add to the other books on Timber Framing. This one goes into more details about the engineering and calculations than others. If timber framing then you should own this book.

Great book for learning traditional timber framing techniques.
Definitely the best of the 4 books I have covering this topic. If I had any criticism of this book it would be colour photos would be nice but the black and white photos in the book are fine, so definitely not a deal breaker.
