Gullah for You : A dictionary
This is a very good dictionary for anyone who is interested in the Gullah people & their language. I heard about the Gullah people from my Aunt who works for the Wycliffe Bible Translators. Since I live in the Carolinas and I'm very interested in other languages I thought I might need a dictionary to help with some of the harder pronunciations in all the Gullah books that I've purchased. This book has helped a great deal since it has the phonic pronunciations for each word.I do think that they should have put the word "dictionary" in the title so everyone would know before they purchased the book so that is the only reason I didn't give the book 5 stars.

The Gullus/Gichee language is fascinating
My father's family was all from Columbia, SC. As a child, I would go to reunions and not understand my own relatives when they spoke. However, after a couple of days, I could lapse into the language and speak it, much to my mother's disappointment. To this day, my siblings and I are still making up words that only we understand. This book was excellent for me. But for all of you who have never heard this wonderful language spoken, I strongly suggest trying to find the movie "Daughters in the Dust". I am so glad the people in the coastal regions of South Carolina are working to preserve this culture! So many mistake it for New Orleans cajun-but it is truly a language all its own.

Gullah meanings and phonetics. Wish there was more to digest!
The author died a few years ago but this book remains about the only one I could find that lists many Gullah words/meanings with phonetics. It is just what I wanted and thought it would be, as I looked high and low for resources on this. I wish there was more in this book as I am sure there is much that will be lost over the years. I am afraid the ultimate book will never be written and years from now only a handful of people will appreciate this creole language.

Great book!
This book was a lot of fun and very comprehensive. The layout was great for sharing with the group I bought it for.

Meh. I was expecting more.
I was expecting A LOT MORE from this "guide." It's literally a dictionary of words with the same pronunciations that the rest of the South says. There were only some actual Gullah words and phrases like "day clean." The rest is just Southern diction.

What a waste
I was looking for, as the description said, "A study of the only English-derived Creole language...," but found only a dictionary. There is nothing in here about the etymology of the words or anything to be used as a guide or, "...valuable tool for students and researchers wanting to learn more about the Gullah language." Waste of money and time.
