Curse of the Dragon Slayer [DVD]

Here There Be No Dragons
This poor movie suffers from the most confusing of identity crisis since IMDB seems to indicate it has had at the least 4 different titles. Why the US release decided on this one is beyond me because there are a total of one dragon in the movie that dies within the first 5 seconds. The movie is actually about the God of Death being summoned by a group of shadow warriors and the elf, orc, and knight who have to form a merry band to stop it from happening. There's Keltus the Wanderer. Also known as Keltus the Cleric and Keltus the Forsaken and my personal name for him: Keltus the Not Very Good at His Job. He's a scruffily cute Irishman who works for some sort of goddess with all the vagueness that implies an origin movie somewhere in the ether of this actor's filmography. He's not a very good knight honestly. For someone whose reputation seems to be known far and wide, he is constantly getting stabbed. The only person getting stabbed more than him is Nemyt the elf, who is something of a walking pin cushion. She and Keltus bond over dying and getting stabbed repeatedly. She stares at him in wonder a couple times, implying a looming romance if Dragon Slayer/Shadow Cabal/Curse of the Shadow/Dragon Lore/Shadow Warriors 3 ever gets made. The last main character is Kullimon, a warrior orc playing the "tonight we dine in hell" trope. The group has to get a Bone Vase and a Blood Stone and have to stop everything at a Well of Demons or something similar in a movie that uses every epic fantasy name it can think of. Keltus has to fight the God of Death, Kullimon has to avenge his honor and Nemyt has to get revenge all while gathering (or failing to gather) the alphabet soup of fantasy items in the mythical land of Utah.Oddly enough, this movie is a good B movie. The cinematography is actually pretty good as is the make up on the orcs. Some effort was actually put into production. The plot is paper thin and ridiculous, but it's a fun B movie. It wouldn't have been out of place in the pantheon of 80s fantasy movies.

An Elf, an Orc, and a Human walk into a bar...
Exceeded my expectations for this genre. An Elf, an Orc and a Human band together despite their differences to fight a greater evil. Per usual, they go on a quest fighting various dangers on the way. They must collect sacred objects on their quest. Was this based on a video game?I got confused. Was it the Flagon with the Dragon? The chalice from the palace ? But they seemed to know where to travel and what to look for. I'd be like, "any of you Orcs got a pencil? I got to write down these locations and objects"The Orcs are a bit funny after a while. The Orc acting school has them swaying and bobbing like Igor in the laboratory.Despite the title there's only one dragon. And he's dispatched with one arrow in the opening sequence. And there's a couple dragons flying in the distant sky at end of movieOverall though it's a fun flick. Just go with the ride

The story is more like those in Role Playing Games than it is like Lord of the Rings, which is fine with me.
Definitely above average for a fantasy movie without a blockbuster budget and trying to stay true to the features of Role Playing Games (characters' choices making them good or evil, characters' having alliances with different gods, independent questing, group questing, etc.). If anything, a case can be made that they try to do too much in the time they have. RPGs have the luxury of much more time to completely develop the story and complete the quest. As an avid RPG fan, I like this movie and how they tell the story they are telling. That said, the movie spotlights one of the features of the games that I like, but does not crossover to movies very well: the heroes ability recover from battle wounds. In a game, the player's characters may take a great deal of damage/injuries in a fight, but then fully heal before the next fight. While this makes no sense in the real world, a real world standard for a fantasy game/movie may be asking too much. I don't need to see one of the heroes walk with a limp after a battle to enjoy the movie.Eventhough it does look like the movie makers are trying to set a record for the most number of names for a single movie, I do hope that people keep making these types of movies.

Worth watching if you like the genre!
This review is going to be honest for what the product is. I was not watching this looking for next level CGI, a script worthy of the Oscars, and famous actors around every corner. If you are looking for those things, don't watch it. You will not enjoy it.If you are looking for something in the genre, accepting that it was made with a budget that was a fraction of other fantasy movies like Lord of the Rings, then it is actually very good! Watch it past the first 25 minutes and you will want to finish it. Worthwhile. The acting is solid, the script is decent, the plot is fairly cool, and the fighting choreography is very good most of the time.It has a pen and paper campaign feel. I took a minute afterwards to imdb some of the cast and see if they were in other movies like it.So, tl;dr if you are expecting Lord of the Rings 2/5 if you understand this is not a blockbuster with 200m+ budget, 4/5

This was a cool movie! Don't know what all the bad ratings ...
This was a cool movie! Don't know what all the bad ratings are about. Had the usual good vs evil plot, but the elf girl was super interesting with her ferocity and the Orc was truly admirable as a strong and near unbeatable warrior. I wish there had been more back story on the beautiful seer who was seen giving prophecy about the main character near the start... It has believable effects and beautiful scenery. They should have had more dragons but then again you don't want a movie to overuse the most popular scene-stealer as a crutch. If you are into the sci-fi genre and want a nice entertaining movie to watch while you're eating dinner, this is great for that. I also love that the Orc and the elf developed a friendship that was enough for him to risk his life to save her and her to end a lifetime of vengeance against his kind for the loss of her clan/tribe.

Finally.. a copy in NTSC for North America
Been trying to get this movie for a long time. Ordered twice before from 2 different suppliers. Both were in European format. Useless in Canada. For those that have watched the free upload on you-tube, this copy has translations for Orc speak and other parts that have been cut out (for copyright). Good story and thoroughly enjoyed it. Glad it is finally in my library. NOTHING beats having a hard copy.

Excellent film fantastique
Très rare film, pas très connu, mais pour un fan de ce genre fantastique, je suis tout à fait comblé.
