Capone

I thought this movie was really good for what it was supposed to be. Not a mob story about Al Capone, but a close look at the last year of his life suffering of Syphallitic Dementia. It is a gut wrenching look at his decline, how his family dealt with him, and how the FBI wasn't sure if he was still a threat or completely gone. I especially love how the family is depicted as reverent to him still, having trouble coping with him as someone lost and not the Alfonse he was 10 years ago. It was also interesting to see how a formely powerful man can be really scary when all his memories are jumbled and/or missing. I always wondered what his last days were like as most biopics stop when he got arrested and treat the Syphilis issue as a post script, this film answered those questions beautifully and depressingly. If you want a typical shoot em up mob biopic, there are dozens of other options out there about Capone and others like them. I don't think the negative reviews of this movie are fair, especially since most of them are complaints that this wasn't a story about Capone in his Chicago mob boss days. Read the description before you rent and if your still not clear, pay attention to the first title cards explaining what this film will be about.

Waste of 1 hr 43 minutes of my life that I can't get back. Don't you do the same.This was a movie with a sizeable budget. Lots of money spent. Not some throwaway movie with a cheap cast, low-budget acting, poor direction and poor production values. This was supposed to be a really good film. But for whom?A perfect movie for someone who wants to watch a man die of tertiary syphilis.A perfect movie for someone who wants to see a man with dementia.A perfect movie for someone who wants to actually see a man defecate in bed.A perfect movie for someone who wants to see the effects of a man defecating in his pants three times.A perfect movie for someone who wants to see a much fabricated "True Story."A perfect movie for someone who wants to see great actors waisted on a movie that could not be saved.Why waist the film?Why waist the money?Why waste the time?It may be worth watching a movie of the last days of the life of Adolph Hitler, but certainly not a movie of the last days of Al Capone.

Was expecting this movie to be better. And the end sucked.

Here is a movie that defies normal storytelling, and offers us clues, moods, and homages to other tales. If you travel through the story, you will find many pieces of a traditional story, many traditions of filmmaking masterfully duplicated but repurposed in an entirely new vision. It paints with many colors, mostly darker shades. At times, you may get the feeling you're being spoken to in slang by someone who speaks 8 languages. The movie is beautiful, and at times extremely generous with it's grandeur. At other times, it's visceral, absurd, and scatological.This is an incomparable and necessary contribution to the cinema of nostalgia, the telling of gangster stories, and the examination of mortality and meaning. Also, it's very fun, made so not least by the pacing, and the acting, and the editing. The cast is incredible, and very well used. Josh Trank did more than just a great job. He did at least 3 great jobs: writing, directing, and editing. What we get to see here is a singular creative vision fully realized

I am a huge Tom Hardy fan and I am a huge mafia buff. I love almost all mafia movies, even the ones like John Travolta's recent "Gotti" which had poor reviews. This movie is (somewhat of a spoiler alert so be warned) about a man struggling with health and dementia issues. I kept thinking at some point it would transition to a mafia related story but it never materialized.Tom Hardy's acting was superb given the role he was playing, however the movie was slow, dark and really never went anywhere. The preview is definitely misleading. I hate to say this, but I would not recommend this movie unless you are interested in seeing Capone's last miserable hallucination filled year. Even if it is based on a true story it did absolutely nothing for me.I normally wouldn't write a negative review, however I don't want people ordering this movie like I did expecting a certain genre of movie and then getting a completely different type of movie.

I dont usually feel the need to review a movie, no one needs to hear my thoughts on cinematography, atmosphere or acting because I am not a cinematographer, director or actor. but in this case I think its important to say this is not only a movie about Al Capone's final days, it is also a kind of psychological horror. A man trapped in his own mind seen thru his personal experience as well as those around him.Its easy to see when you look at the 1 star review bombs that people were expecting a gangster movie akin to Tom's other gangster films, Legend, Bronson and Lawless.I find it hard to blame it entirely on poor marketing or unconscious buyers. If a Marvel movie departed from formula as much as this has from previous Hardy films there would be the same reaction. But this is exactly my point, this is a different director. Legend was Directed by Brian Helgeland, Lawless by John Hillcoat and Bronson by Nicholas Winding Refn.There is no departure from the formula, because there is no formula. The only thing common among these 3 movies is action, and Tom Hardy. So perhaps the worst thing that could happen for this movie was that Tom was cast as Capone, despite his performance, because of the crowd it attracts.

Gift and was as expected

Das Positive zuerst: Tom Hardy ist hervorragend. Überhaupt sind die schauspielerischen Leistungen aller Beteiligten beeindruckend. Nun hätte ich kein Problem mit einem Film über Capones Leben, in dem in den letzten 20 Minuten über seinen körperlichen Verfall im letzten Lebensjahr berichtet wird. Aber über 100 Minuten? Das wird irgendwann langweilig.

Über die vielen negativen Rezensionen zu diesem Film bin ich tatsächlich etwas überrascht, ich vermute, dass die meisten Rezensenten etwas ganz anderes erwartet hätten.Denn "Capone" ist keiner der üblichen Gangsterfilme, in denen AL CAPONE als brutaler und skrupelloser Mobster gezeigt wird, der sich mit unbarmherziger Härte an die Spitze der Chicagoer Unterwelt mordet."Capone" von Regisseur JOSH TRANK hat einen komplett anderen Ansatz, er zeigt den berühmten Gangster am Ende seines Lebens, nachdem er aus der Haft entlassen wurde und gesundheitlich schwer angeschlagen in Florida vor sich hin vegetiert.Man kennt AL CAPONE nur als erfolgreichen Unterweltboss, eventuell weiß man dann noch, dass er wegen Steuerhinterziehung verurteilt und zu elf Jahren Zuchthaus verurteilt wurde. Dass er sich aber bereits 1928 bei einer Prostituierten mit der Syphilis angesteckt hatte, die sein Gehirn langsam "aufgefressen" und zu einer schweren Demenz geführt hat, wissen wohl nicht mehr ganz so viele. Wegen diverser Angriffe auf sein Leben, guter Führung und seiner schweren Krankheit, wurde er deshalb 1939 vorzeitig aus Haftanstalt Alcatraz entlassen. Die letzten acht Jahre lebte er dann auf seinem Anwesen in Florida, schwer von seiner Krankheit und der daraus resultierenden Demenz gezeichnet. Am 25. Januar 1947 starb er dann an den Folgen eines Schlaganfalls im LAter von nur 48 Jahren.Genau von diesen letzten Jahren handelt der Film, er zeigt den berühmten Gangster als leere Hülle, als einen Menschen der von seinen Dämonen getrieben wird. Der Film zeigt, wie AL CAPONE zunehmend den Kontakt zur Realität verliert, von Halluzinationen getrieben wird, die Kontrolle über seinen Körper verliert, sich einnässt und vollkotet. Der Film zeigt ein jämmerliches Bild des berühmten Unterweltbosses, hat also nichts mit anderen filmen zu tun.Deshalb ist der Film auch so verwirrend, man muss genau aufpassen, denn so manche Figur existiert nur in der Fantasie von CAPONE, man weiß nie so recht, was real und was Fantasie ist. Im Prinzip sieht man die Welt so, wie sie AL CAPONE zum Schluss gesehen hat .... und das ist beängstigend.TOM HARDY spielt den berühmten Gangster echt gut, ich stelle mir das nicht so leicht vor, eine ständig vor sich hin "brabbelnde" Figur zu spielen. Ich finde er macht das gut und erschreckend überzeugend, vor allem weil einen die "normale" Demenz ja auch treffen kann.Neben HARDY hat eigentlich kaum einer der anderen Darsteller Platz sich zu entfalten, einzig LINDA CARDELLINI, die seine Frau "Mae" spielt, kann sich noch in Szene setzen.Im Film wird von einem unehelichen Sohn namens "TONY" die Rede, allerdings gibt es keine Indizien dafür, dass ein solcher Sohn überhaupt existiert hat. Auch den Hausarzt "Dr. Karlock" (Kyle McLachlan) gab es nicht, das dürfte wohl unter die Kategorie "künstlerische Freiheit" fallen.Mein Fazit: "Capone" ist ein ziemlich schwieriger und verdammt schräger Film, der nichts mit all den anderen Filmen über den berühmten Unterweltboss zu tun hat. TOM HARDY ist ja prädestiniert für "schräge" Rollen, ich finde ihn als dementen AL CAPONE sehr überzeugend.Ich kann es verstehen, dass viele den Film schrecklich langweilig finden, ich persönlich mag ihn eigentlich, weil er das Leben aus der Sicht eines von der Demenz gezeichneten Mann zeigt .... was einem echt Angst machen kann. Es ist schwierig Halluzinationen und Realität auseinanderzuhalten, aber irgendwie ist das der Reiz des Films, ich fand ihn zu jedem Zeitpunkt interessant.
