They worked great, until they didn't
I ordered these to replace the worn out struts in a car top cargo box. The installation was pretty straight forward, four nuts off, old struts off, new struts on, four bolts on, and the box lid could now lift itself up onto the struts. I was quite pleased with them. We tested the cargo box by putting some luggage into it which necessitated opening & closing the lid several times.On the third or fourth closing, we heard two pops in quick succession, and discovered that both struts had snapped in exactly the same place (the narrow end away from the gas tube, right at the joint). Since we need the cargo box for a trip leaving tomorrow morning, I decided to try to repair them with epoxy and a wooden flange connector I made on my lathe. The repair works great, but now the struts can no longer close all the way down because they actually hit the repair. The repair blocks are only about 1" long, I made them as short as I could, but they're still too long to allow the struts to compress far enough to close the lid of the cargo box.Possibly I got the strut dimensions wrong, but I measured them several times against the old ones to make sure they were compatible, and they seemed to be. I suspect the bolt that attaches the strut rod to the eyes is simply too thin for the job asked of it.Obviously since I've tried to repair them they're no longer able to be returned. I have no idea what caused them to break, they seemed to be working perfectly and weren't under any particular strain other than the weight of the cargo box lid itself. They would open the lid just fine with no evidence of straining to do so.Anyway, lesson learned.
