More than Satisfied
I'm not really a keyboard player, but I needed something to enhance my home recordings. I'd looked at this instrument in a music store and thought it would meet my needs at an affordable price.I was right. I've been quite pleased with it.It's a lot simpler to use than my old Roland keyboard, and the voices are more satisfactory. Moreover, the size fits my music room better than a larger keyboard. I will never need all 49 keys, but if I need to be in a range lower or higher than the keyboard setting, I can use the octave keys to set it the way I need it.If I have any complaints, it's the fact that the mx49 has a number of bells and whistles (not to mention some weird voices) I'll never need. But I felt like I had to get something with the extras in order to get the ones I needed. So far--I've only had this a few months now--I've used one each of the piano, violin, and flute settings and played around with many of the others.I'm more than satisfied.

Great little keyboard
This has all the voices and styles one might need in a small, lightweight 49 key package. Over 1000 Motif voices. Interfaces with VYCRO MX performance editor that makes it easy to create new performances using full screen GUI instead of the two line build in display. Slightly under powered. Nothing you cannot make up when hooked to an amp, but the sound level on a head phone are low. Enough to take away one star.

Excellent general purpose keyboard
Excellent general purpose keyboard, but targeted more towards a casual player with 49 keys.If you're looking to get into playing keyboard (vs. full piano), I strongly recommend going with the 61 key MX61 as it will cover a wider range than this unit. This is excellent for leads or melody which cover several octaves, but you will find yourself crashing into a floor if you try to play both Treble and Bass staffs with this unit. The sounds are superb and diverse, with a good grand piano as the power-on default. It includes a number of percussive rhythms which are good fun, but a bit picky to deal with. The hardest part to deal with in this unit is the display based menus. Not everything is laid out and it makes navigating a bit of a chore.

Cheap. And sounds like it.
Let me start off by saying that if you are new to the world of synthesizers or sampling keybaords, the MX is probably just fine for you. But if you've ever played any kind of high end keyboard like a Kronos or a Kurzweil K series or a Fantom, you're probably going to be sorely disappointed. The piano sounds are average at best. The electric paiano sounds are horrid. Most are awash in so much reverb and tremolo that they're unusable. The guitar sounds don't even remotely sound authentic. There are however and handful of good synth lead sounds and a few good pads, but most of the pads sound so incredibly similar that you can almost swap one for another and not know the difference. And lastly, the keybed itself is atrocious. Literally the worst feeling and noisiest keybed I've ever experienced. I regret buying this unit 100%.

Excellent quality. A bit pricey.
The quality of this synth is excellent. The MOTIF sounds are AMAZING as well. The only thing that got to me was the price. Outside of the inclusion of the MOTIF sounds, I don't really see any justification for the $600 price tag. Even $550 would have been fine. Further, the price jump from this MX49 (key) to the MX61 (key) is $200! $200 for 12 extra keys? Who set the pricing on this device? Clearly something is not right with the pricing. The little display was also scratched up, though I'm not docking a star for that because they are not visible when the display is on.
