Acts: Catching Up with the Spirit

Excellent Book - especially for group study
I enjoyed this book very much as a Sunday School study. I read the book along with discussion at church that included an excellent leader’s guide and videos. I believe I understood the information in this book much better in a group setting than I would have on my own since the ideas could be extended to the personal through questions and discussion. The author has an inclusive tone regarding the content throughout, bringing up different points of views from individual perspectives (such as minor characters and how events may have affected their own faiths and livelihoods) that further enriched this study. I believe this author has two more books centered on Acts; good to have a known author and content that I can suggest to our Adult Discipleship Team at church. Kudos to the author and highly recommended!

Great Study!
I've read the Book of Acts many times. We're studying this book in adult Sunday School class, and it has made these early Christians come alive for me, as well as make me think how we can emulate them today.

A Fresh Look at the Church's Beginnings
This book gives a fresh view of Acts and the early church that is different from the usual tracking Paul's travels and what happened where. Author and Pastor Matthew L. Skinner instead helps us look at the bigger picture in the context of the times, including the many "minor" characters who kept the faith and grew the faith after Paul or Peter departed. In six chapters, he refers to scripture, describes what is happening in historical context, and challenges today's church. Those early beginnings help us see that while the church is made up of fallible humans, God leads, guides, and sustains. This is a great book from which to learn more about the early church and our place in God's story.

Best study of Acts I've encountered!
Whether you find the book of Acts befuddling, inspiring, amusing, or provocative (or all of the above), I can testify that traveling through it with Matthew Skinner as your trusted guide will benefit you greatly. Sure you’ll gain some knowledge and insight, but most importantly you’ll feel yanked right into the story of the good news of Jesus Christ in a transformative way. Equipped by the Holy Spirit, caught up by the Holy Spirit, you’ll long to catch up with the Holy Spirit as it’s moving here and now among us. The very same Holy Spirit that rollicks through Acts, propelling our ancient siblings in the faith, motivates us to act out God’s vision of salvation and liberation— deep (even sacrificial) care of our neighbor at both the personal and social systemic level, transformative hospitality, expansive inclusion, and, in Skinner’s words “generous unity.” A perfect resource for churches and study groups—exactly the right length, depth, and shall I say, spirit!
