Q: What is the weight limit for this? I saw someone said 180 pounds. Surely that isn't true?

Just googled to double check - this site's specs say the weight limit is 200 lbs (not sure if link will work in here) http://www.fingerhut.com/product/Home/Tools-Equipment/Storage-Workbenches/Cynthia-Storage-Bench/pc/27101/c/25305/sc/25347/QN867.utsIt's sturdy enough for someone over that to sit on to take their shoes off or something, but probably not for daily use. The interior storage area doesn't seem super strong. For a decorative piece, this works great for us, but if you are looking for something to sit on regularly, I'd say get something else.

this bench does have safety hinges

Q: Would this work for a toy box in a child's room?

I would say that it could. I have mine next to a side entry in my house. We store my wife's large diaper bag in it, her work bag, my work bag, and other smaller things. it might get a little banged up by the toys, but it depends. The slow closing hinge also helps from little fingers getting pinched.

solid wood. very sturdy. I hate particle board
