Not the Romance I was Expecting - Didn't Like the Heroine All that Much
I'm in the minority here. I was on a reviewers' profile perusing reviews and read that this was their all time favorite. Since I am a fan of Lorraine Heath, I thought - why not give it a read? I kept waiting and waiting and waiting for the shoe to drop - rather the romance to enter in, but I just didn't like our heroine - Lauren Fairfield. This book is somewhat related to the "Rogues in Texas" series - A Rogue in Texas , Never Love a Cowboy , Never Marry a Cowboy  - although it is in fact part of the "Daughters of Fortune" series. In the "Rogues in Texas" series, Lauren's mother (from Texas) fell in love and married an English aristocrat who packed up the family and brought them back to good old England. Problem is - Lauren, at 14 years of age, wasn't ready to leave because she was in love with a 16 year old boy named Tom. When Lauren realized her mother was taking her to England, she was one unhappy girl. Tom and Lauren made promises to one another. Promises that were kept, but never realized by Tom and Lauren, due to a betrayal by Lauren's mother. Now it is ten years later, Lauren has finally managed to figure out how to get back to Texas. But along comes the handsome, successful, Cowboy Tom to England, only he isn't simply Tom any longer. It seems he is the long lost Earl of Sachse and he has come to England with two goals in mind - one to take up his title, properties and responsibilities - the other to find Lauren and get paid for a debt she owes him. This was sweet and cute. In fact, much of the banter from Tom to Lauren was really sweet. Tom requests Lauren's aid in tutoring him in all of society's rules so he will be able to fit into his new world.Problem was - I didn't care for Lauren and her mindset. She had longed for Tom during all those long lost years, but as soon as he arrives in England, she is determined to get to Texas. She balks at helping him until he promises he will buy her passage back to Texas. Even after becoming reacquainted and becoming intimate, she still holds fast to her plan to return to Texas. After awhile, I just didn't care about Lauren any longer. Yes, I absolutely did care about Tom and wanted him to have Lauren because he wanted her so much. Not quite what I was expecting. When you love your man, you don't hanker for Texas more than you hanker for a life with him - especially when he's a darling, steadfast man like Tom. Hello??

My Heart Almost Stopped Beating
The epilogue of this story just melted my heart. This book took me on a journey and I was glad I decided to read it.Second chance romance is tricky to write because of the development and how the past is integrated into the character’s present and future. Lorraine Heath did it splendidly. The hero and heroine fell in love as young teenagers (16 and 14). They met again as adults (mid twenties). The heroine’s mother kept them from communicating and corresponding all those years. But both characters were able to connect again and explore the what might have been in their relationship. I enjoyed reading their sweet moments where they share an experience related to their past as a young couple. I enjoyed how this love just got stronger. This is a book to read for when you want to believe in hope and love.

fantastic love story, worth more than 5 stars
What a wonderful love story. This was my first Lorraine Heath book, and I am now a big fan. I can't believe I actually let this book sit on my to-be-read pile for about 6 months. The story itself is a simple, tender, passionate and seductive tale of two young hearts, Tom & Lauren, that fell in love only to be separated when her family moves to England. They meet up again 10 years later, and it is clear there is still a great deal of love between them. However, they really don't know each other, as there were deceptions that kept their communications from each other all those years. During those years she never felt like she fit in, and wants to go back to Texas where women have more freedom. She agrees to help Tom learn society rules in exchange for passage to America. Tom uses it as an opportunity to get to know her again, and do they ever. This isn't a fast paced, action packed hero-fights-the-evil-bad-man-and-saves-the-damsel-in-distress story, but it tugs at the heart and captivates you 100%. The sexual tension between these two could be cut with a knife. Tom was a wonderful "hero", and could make a girls toes curl with a simple smile or the word "darlin'". I loved him. Lauren was very likable too. She was sensible, smart and willing to do a little chasing as well as be chased by the hero. I found that really refreshing, as it seams in most romances the hero has to make all the moves and heroine is just a cardboard cutout waiting for him to make a move. I would give this book more than a 5 star rating if it was possible. It was that good.

Wonderful love story
I had to dry my tears at the end of this book. It has to be one of her nest. Great story line. It kept me reading straight through which I couldn’t do because it would end the story too soon so I had to pace myself so I wouldn’t finish to fast!

Texas True
Beautiful story of a promise made and kept. Separated from each other when Lauren was fourteen and Tom was sixteen; he was an orphan boy who fell in love with a pretty girl that he'd teased in the Texas town of Fortune. She left when her mother met & married an English Lord but they promised each other someday. Ten years later; his letters were never received also her letters never got to him. So each thought the other had broken their promise. Now Tom has appeared as the long thought dead son of deceased Lord of Sachese. Lauren only finds out this Lord is her long lost Tom Warner. Read on to see how they find each other with some drama thrown in. Diamondgirl

I loved many books by Lorraine Heath. This is not one. I disliked Lauren and her obsession with moving back to Texas. Moving back to Texas was more important than the person she was supposed love. I read HRs for the romance. This story lacked the passion I look for in an HR.

Call me Darlin anytime!
It always amazes me that people think you have to be an adult for love to stand the test of time but, Young people can love just as strong and just as fierce. What a great story whose love stood the test of time!

emotionally moving
A wonderful book about love everlasting. I thoroughly enjoyed every page. I loved Tom as he endeared himself to me. His challenge was his love of Lauren. And a great adventure they had finding each other. A must read. A huge favourite.

3 Uneven Stars
Lauren Fairfield may appear to be the picture of English nobility and sophistication, but her soul and heart still hungers for untamed Texas and the charming young man she loved and lost - cowboy Tom. When Tom arrives in England, Lauren is startled to realise that he is the lost Earl of Sachse. But even as joy engulfs her so does sadness, Tom's future lies in England within the Ton, whereas she feels that in order to gain happiness she needs to return to Texas. The attraction and affection between Tom and Lauren was clear, but the two as individuals and couple didn't have me potently entranced. Usually Heath does fab in engaging my emotions, but that didn't happen here until near the end.Not exactly what I was hoping for, given this is a Lorraine Heath book, and I don't see myself re-reading this, but the last bit of the book did thug a little on the heartstrings.

PROMISE ME FOREVER
Lauren Fairchild was first brought to England ten years ago when her Mother married Lord Ravenleigh, she had since been brought up to be a lady and all that entails to behave in society. But Lauren had never really belonged, she always missed Texas and the boy she had loved Tom. She had refused all offers for her hand as she had never felt the love that she had once felt for the lad she left behind. Then out of the blue Tom is in London he is the new Earl of Sachse. He intends to renew his acquaintance with Lauren. She is angry with him he had promised to write every day when she left Texas, but she had received not one letter, even though she had wrote to him.I love Lorraine Heath's books she is a wonderful writer, but on this occasion this book was not as good as I had hoped, mostly the problem I had was with Lauren's character, she had spent ten years missing Tom still in love with him in her heart, but the minute he appears she declares her intent to return to Texas alone. What? She is jealous if he mentions getting married, but still intends to leave even though it is obvious there is no one else for him. But none of this stops her being intimate with him.In fact she came across as a bit contrary. I did not feel the depth of passion and emotion that is usual in this authors other stories I have read. The side characters were all shallow especially Lauren's friends. The reason I gave this book four stars was for the epilogue is was marvellous.
