I was HIGHLY concerned with making this purchased, having read numerous negative reviews. I'm considering this a starter set for my 8 year old son, who shocked us with his Christmas list when he asked for a chess set. I wanted to by something nicer (wood) than a $5 plastic and cardboard set. I also didn't want to invest some $200 chess table with marble pieces only to have him be disinterested in chess in a month. This $30 to $40 price range seemed appropriate, but the negative reviews on virtually ever set on Amazon were disheartening.Needless to say I am glad I took the risk on this one. I'm not getting a $100 chess set for $35 but for $35 this far exceeded my expectations. The board is very nice, the pieces seem of decent quality and the wood checker pieces actually stack for "kinging"I think folks who have a problem with the quality of this product may want to consider what they paid for it...

it is checkers. just what you would expect it to be. i was looking for a board that was not made of cardboard, and this one fits that need perfectly. my one complaint, is that the checkers don't stack well for the "king" play. they just slide off of each other. the easy and cheap answer to this, is to use the cheap plastic red and black checkers that come with the cheap boards....but use this board, because it is way better.

When i saw this, I thought this would be a nice, solid wood set. While wood, the board itself is very slippery. And the pieces (both chess and checkers) are very light--extraordinarily so. One tiny brush with your finger and the unintended piece will invariably knock over or slide around. It may seen trivial, but it's actually highly annoying always re-adjusting or fixing pieces as you go. Don't get seduced by the "wood" factor of this set as I did.

The board is very nice! However I was upset that the set did not include all of the pieces as it was missing a white rook chess piece. As some other customers/purchasers have noted, the pieces are proportionately small and even somewhat warped. After having tried to contact the manufacturers for a replacement rook, I never got a reply. I wound up having to buy replacement pieces for this set. As much as I do like the board I don't quite feel that the price is right.

Bought this wooden chess and checker set for my grandchildren to keep at my home. The board is very nice, sturdy and well made. I was very pleased. My grandson plays checkers and is learning chess and my granddaughter is an excellent chess player. I feel this is so well made it could be passed down to my grandchildren some day. Would purchase this again as a gift. I like that it folds up to store on a shelf.

Our grandchildren are picking up chess and we bought boards for them. I picked this up so that we grandparents can play and maybe keep up with the kids when we see them. This set is great, with the board folding in half and holding the pieces, compact and organized.

This is a decent set for the price. I was looking for something that was better quality than the cheap cardboard and plastic set we are all familiar with. After reading many reviews, I chose this one and it was a good decision. It's a good basic wood board with decent plastic pieces. We have little kids who use it so it needs to be durable, which it is, but not crazy expensive.

Of all the chess boards I have looked at, this one is by far the best quality for the money. The board and pieces are very nicely crafted in the traditional Staunton style. The colors complement the board nicely as well.
