Wonderful from a "Life of Wonder"
it is seldom that the first sentence of the preview of a book opens your heart to a book but that is what I found. It is not a book to be read for readings sake, it is a book to read a paragraph or two and then contemplate what it has awakened- this is spiritual food and you pause often to wait for your growth to catch up. Heschel's "Prophets" is heavy and filling, it takes work to get from one important insight to the next while "Man's Quest for God" carries you on its back. This was written in the decade after Heschel had lost his family to the Holocaust and is the work of a Rabbi with strong reference to Jewish Spiritual practice- that said, this Quaker found it insightful in its thoughts on prayer and the life of the spirit.

Great book
This book is deeply profound and can not be read quickly. Each paragraph, sentence, sometimes each word needs to be digested slowly and allowed to open our hearts and minds to the Almighty. Heschel gently leads his readers into that same awe and wonder and love that he experiences with God. This is the second book that I've read by this author. As a Christian, Heschel has shown me the underlying commonality shared by people who worship the same God. While our paths may be different, the journey is much the same.

Cautionary Book
Heschel once again shines light on aspects of faith I had not previously considered. For example, he explores ever so deftly the dangers of falling into religious habits that become little more than a means of driving our own personal needs. Rabbi Heschel brings the reader back to the real purpose of faith and of faith practice - to align oneself with God.

Worth Working At
The first chapter of this book was so abstruse I had to read it aloud (or make my partner do it) to get involved, but after that its passion and beauty and truth moved me, and have stayed with me. Heschel was of course writing as a man of his time (late 50's, early 60's) and some of what he writes sounds a doomsday knell as tradition seemed to be going to hell - but in fact, his insistence on the efficacy of practicing prayer (until you get good at it?) and the comfort of ritual made me feel sorry for people who attend synagogue (or church) once or twice a year and are bored because they haven't tried to understand or participate fully in the practices.

Rabbi Heschel is a philosophical genius and a man of G-d. I have read all his books over and over and learn new things all the time. May his writings & memory be a blessing to all!

The Search is Amazing!
All books by Heschel meet my expectations. You can expect the best from him and this book is no different. The power of prayer taught in a way that captures you and holds you until you realize how great God is.

An excellent read.
Heschel was a Jewish Philosopher - which much of interest to say for the modern Christian. An excellent read.

Essence of Prayer
A beautiful book - the most profound, uplifting, meaningful exposition of prayer that I have ever come across in my life's search for God.
