Nabucco

Outdoor venue interesting.
I liked the venue it played in. I prefer the Metropolitan opera presentation conducted by James Levine.

Grand Opera On A Grand Scale
If we lived in a perfect world, I could give this performance 4.5 stars, but since I liked the performance, I rounded up,, rather than down. The staging moves the action from the Babylonian captivity to the Resorgimento uprisings of 1848, which negates much of the dramatic tension in the original setting. It works, mind, but not smoothly. (I should note by way of edit that this review is of the Blu ray edition, not the DVD.)Musically it is quite good. Daniel Oren, who has taken some heat in recent years for slow tempi Has this score pretty well nailed. Chorus members act as well as sing.Soloists also perform to a high level. Susanna Branchini (Abigaille) does very well indeed in a part that is known for the fiendish demands it makes. In fact, I hesitated to buy this disc, because I wondered about Ms. Branchini's ability to cope with the demands of the role. Having watched it twice, I am of the opinion that she did very well, indeed. The men do well, also. George Gagnidze handles the title role quite well, both vocally and dramatically. The staging casts him as an Austrian General, so the crediblity of his "conversion" to a deity is weak. Rafal Siwek (Zaccaria) also sings well, but his role, too, is dramatically compromised by the staging. This is an outdoor setting at the Arena di Verona, so some of the high end sound seems a bit attenuated. Nonetheless, I find this to be a quite satisfying performance and recommend it.
