An Excellent Look at Railroading in Illinois
This book brought back many wonderful memories I had riding the AT&SF, CRI&P, GM&O, IC, L&N, and MP named trains of the 1960's. I consider J. David Ingles a master photographer, and I believe this book faithfully captures the true character of each railroad during the era. When I view the photographs, I am brought back to a time when small rural communities were served by local freights and dependable passenger service. The book lives up to its billing. The coverage of the central Illinois region is excellent. Unlike other books, which tend to focus on one carrier or only a handful of locations, this book provides a broad spectrum of rural and urban locations. In addition, it documents lines, which perished as railroads merged and rationalized their networks. I consider the book an excellent reference document and an informative read. The photographs are excellent.
