An in-depth learning tool
For those looking to brush up on their artistic techniques or for complete beginners like myself looking for an in-depth guide this does not disappoint! Each section is broken down very well, with easy to follow guidance and references. This would be a great addition to any artists library!

Takes you through all the basics and more!
Love this book, it is exactly what I had hoped for and they even plant a tree for every book sold! My only slight criticism would be that the font they use is very small! I have perfect eye sight so can manage but I imagine it might be a struggle for others!! Maybe on the 3rd edition this could be improved on?! But seriously a great book otherwise.

Style over substance & practically unreadable
I’m sure there’s lots to like about this book if you’re looking for something that covers everything from composition to drawing a face, but I found that it just skimmed the surface & didn’t dive deeply enough into what’s important to me - good composition and how to achieve it. It was full of very lovely photos but WHY is the font so small? I reckon it’s 7 or 8 point at best and even with my contact lenses I struggled to read it. It’s made even more irritating -and unnecessary - given the huge amount of blank spaces on many of the pages- very stylish I’m sure, but not terribly practical. I also don’t like the writing style - lots of words but no lightbulb moments. I bought another book at the same time - Mastering Composition: Techniques and Principles to Dramatically Improve Your Painting by Ian Roberts https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1581809247?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details - which is fantastic, does a really deep dive into the topics that are important to me and is written with an easy, absorbing style. Needless to say, I’m returning this one and keeping the other one.
