If ever there was a “band that launched a thousand bands,” it would be the Ventures. Founded in Tacoma, Washington in 1958, their guitar-based instrumental sound would prove hugely influential, inspiring countless followers to pick up a guitar, bass or set of drumsticks and try to emulate their heroes. As these musical neophytes would soon learn, it wasn’t as easy as it initially appeared. The Ventures were masters of tone and technique, deftly arranging their instruments in a seamless approach that was instantly recognizable. Because they were an instrumental group, their songs needed no translation, which resulted in a huge worldwide following. While many rock bands have claimed to be “big in Japan” over the years, the Ventures were the country’s first rock superstars and they maintain a devoted worldwide following to this day. With over 100 million records sold, they are the best-selling instrumental group of all time. Sundazed is proud to rightfully address the magnificent Ventures’ catalog—each title has been sourced from the original Dolton and Liberty Records’ reels and painstakingly mastered to sound and feel like they were originally intended. Along with precise artwork restoration on each vinyl LP title, these new Sundazed editions stand as the definitive re-releases of these monumentally important albums. Long may they rock!

Interesting Snapshot of the Late Sixties
This reissue CD version of the Ventures' hugely successful 1969 Hawaii Five-0 album is well re-mastered and offers several bonus tracks that are nearly as interesting as the original album's tracks. While the Ventures' most influential and most commercially successful phase was in the early sixties, this album provides a snapshot of the end of the decade, with contemporary hits of Joe South, Glen Campbell, and Tommy Roe, television show music, movie theme music, and medleys of music from the musical "Hair" and the recent hits of Dennis Yost and the Classics IV all packed in. Of course, the highlight is the Ventures' remake of the theme from the television program "Hawaii Five-0," in a mix that's slightly more guitar-oriented than the single mix. The production really is quite good, but there's a certain kitschiness to the Ventures' late sixties work that makes it border on elevator music. There's still a feel of cool detachment, but some of the edge was gone. Why? Gerry McGee was the group's new lead guitarist at this point and, in all honesty, the Ventures really missed the edginess of Nokie Edwards on this release. That, and a couple more harder-rocking tracks might have made this a five-star album.

"The Band that Launched a Thousand Bands" +++
I casually ordered this album -- just to get the Hawaii Five-O theme song -- which I find inspiring. I casually let the rest of the album play -- after listening to that theme song [at the start of the album] -- twice. Okay, already knowing I really liked that song -- I was still thrilled by the [seeming] skill, precision and enthusiasm. Upon immediate second hearing -- listening in [cool] *full music critic mode* -- I was amazed by the [actual] skill, precision and enthusiasm radiating from this Hawaii Five-O song. Then, I casually let the other songs play -- still not expecting much. Afterall, the very name of this album is just *Hawaii Five-O*. WELL, the [ongoing] skill, precision and enthusiasm radiating from all these songs -- caused me to greatly wonder if such musical artistry was respected at all in general. The answer is related to the review title that is a well-known quote -- that I learned of after some quick research online. They are rated by some as the best-selling instrumental rock band ever -- and are fully worthy of this and that 1000 bands quote about them. Specifically, their balanced composition of harmony, melody and rythym -- via an early rock-standard line-up of electric guitar, rythym guitar, electric bass and drums [and some other aspects at times] -- is AMAZING +++

2011 not 1968
I am reviewing the NEW Hawaii Five-O CD released by the Ventures in 2011. First let me say that I have been a Ventures fan since 1960. The Hawaii Five-O album (no CD's then) was released in 1968. The Ventures used a full orchestra for most if not all of the songs on that album. This was another facet in the Venture's approach to some great music. As for the "NEW" Hawaii Five-O, it's great. This is the way that Hawaii Five-O should have sounded. More guitar less orchestra. This version has a punch to it, it has a true Ventures groove! The remix is clean and the sound is simply fantastic. The songs have been redone or remixed and all sound great. I have had this in my cd player since I received it a month ago and it has been played constantly! It sounds fresh. It sounds like a brand new band releasing their first CD. Lots of energy. It sounds great. It sounds like The Ventures!

This 2011 edition really sounds fantastic
This 2011 edition sounds fantastic. Very balanced and clear, with a driving guitar/bass/drums sound. Did the Ventures re-record this album or something? When? Were the original band members involved? This sound & arrangement & musicianship is fantastic. Really enjoying it. I was just looking for the Hawaii 5.0 theme, and decided I had to get the whole album, without a doubt. Listen and decide for yourself. I hope the original members were involved and are profiting, but even if not, this thing stands strong on its own.

I lived in Florida when this record originally came out in 1969. I never bought it until now; I wish I had bought it back then for sure !It is really a Great Ventures' Classic ! It sure stands the test of time, and I very much like the added songs also.(These new mp3s are so good, and have a fantastic frequency response !)

Really lovin' the new Ventures CD
If one loved Hawaii Five-0 one will love this new CD reviving their great music of the iconic show. The re-boot of that show now airing on Mondays on CBS is also classic and this CD brings it all together. Listen and Watch. You can't lose.

Remixed in the Garage?
Since I am a bit of a purist, I really only liked the one remix that sounds like the original theme overdubbed with some drum machines in the garage. Has a nice added beat. Otherwise, not really worth adding to your "soundtrack collection."

「Hawaii Five-O Remixed Hits & More!」
