Highly worthwhile. More background info.
I recommend reading down through all the reviews - especially the early ones from the 2000- 2003 time frame which have a lot of details. One reviewer, "Frank", in 2003 gives a more accurate listing of the historical details. Rachel Webb's daughter has additional details. I was interested to realize that Miss Bright, the teacher, was portrayed by Yolanda King, Martin Luther King's daughter. I did not see a lot about John Lewis in the film although he is included. The film is well worth seeing as so many have noted, and is especially worthwhile as a good introduction of the subject to children, but is a good movie for all ages. In 2020 we are at risk of forgetting the struggle that has come before and this film helps to teach us all.The film was aired on ABC TV January 17, 1999 and the DVD was released 2004.I highly recommend the bonus featurette which is a discussion including both Sheyann Webb and Rachael West as adults which includes an update of where the 1965 events led them as adults. They also wrote the 1980 book on which the film was based, Selma, Lord, Selma: Girlhood Memories of the Civil-Rights Days.I want to expand on Jonathan Daniels. Although his role is not fully historically accurately portrayed in the film, we can all benefit from knowing more about him. He was brilliant student (valedictorian) and was a 26 year old seminarian at Episcopal Theological School, Cambridge, Mass. He is considered a martyr and there is a Day of Remembrance for him August 14 in the Episcopal Church Calendar. The Washington National Cathedral unveiled a sculpture of him in 2015. Ruby Sales, the woman he saved on August 20, 1965 when he was shot, was present for the dedication. He is honored in Canterbury Cathedral's Chapel of Saints and Martyrs of Our Own Time, in England.

Outstanding Movie
Selma, Lord, Selma is an accurate account of the foolishness of racism in Dallas County and Selma, Alabama. This movie should be required viewing in every classroom in the nation. Every college student should see it.. Young people today do not know Martin Luther King, Jr., President John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Jim Clark, or the events that happened in the Civil Rights Revolution in the South. Students should be aware of the racism that was part of the nation's culture and how it got to be there. Southern states violated the Constitution of the United States when they denied people the right to vote. It was illegal to disenfranchise anybody. Today we see Voter ID taking the place of poll taxes -- another way to disenfranchise people. This film is a must for everybody.

Should be an addition to ANY LIBRARY in helping America to understand what this movement meant and why it was important for blac
Recently, a black female director released a film entitled SELMA.. It was dynamic.A Historic and fact filled story of what happened in Selma in 1965. This film SELMA LORD SELMA is a Walt Disney produced around he late 1990's, is a child's perspective of living in Selma a the time in 1965, when the march occurred. It was the beginning of the changes dramatically brought about, with new laws to support freedom and equality for the blacks in America. Should be an addition to ANY LIBRARY in helping America to understand what this movement meant and why it was important for blacks and whites alike to have positive changes in a great nation such as America, to be made...

What an excellent movie!!!!
I had this movie a long time ago, and I played it until the tape snapped one day. Jurnee Smollett as the lead character, Sheyann Webb, is an amazing actress whose maturity beyond her years is noteworthy. She has incredible range, better than even some of the adult actors and actresses we see today. You really believe that she wants justice and equality when she marches with Dr. King and those in her community. I must warn any who haven't seen it, however, it is heart-wrenching as you see the faces of inequality and oppression and violence who make every attempt to thwart justice and have everything remain the way it is. Ultimately, it is a story of triumph, hope, belief, and faith.

Great movie
This is a great kid-friendly movie to show younger children. My kids really enjoyed it and its a great way to introduce the idea that ending segregation, and racism is not as clear cut as the history books make it seem.

Good for 9+ year olds
Listed as a movie appropriate for children, I thought it would be good for my 8, almost 9, year olds. Overall the story and language was compelling. The scene at the bridge was still too disturbing for one to watch and she lost it when they showed an on screen shooting. I will wait a year and try again with her.

Great educational film.
Bought this for my kids home education. Great movie although you need to hack your DVD player or buy a cheap region free one off eBay to watch if you are not on region 1 dvds. Kids are ages 12,10 &8. All loved film and learned a lot and enjoyed the presentation of the story from an age appropriate child prospective without exposing them to all the horror of some aspects of the true story.

This movie was just not long enough for me.... It was a great movie but it was a sad thing that a little girl knew more about love and the right ways more then grown adults, I just wish more people even as of today would have a big heart like Shy did... I am proud to see such a beautiful hearted little girl had the strength that she did... This is for sure a must see movie for grown adults and kids of all race... Just makes me proud of her even if I never knew her personally

Interesting Film
Purchased this film a long time ago but finally summons the enthusiam to watch (as thought would be too hard going). Throughly enjoyed film as he gave a good over view of the issues of the day and really reminded me of how far we have come in terms of civil rights and bigotted attitudes. Film would be a good watch for older children.
