Core Archery: Shooting With Proper Back Tension

A Must Read for ALL Archers
This easy to read and understand manual is in my opinion the finest every written in how to properly shoot a bow and arrow. The author is one of the” Greats “ in the sport of field archery and national target archery. The magic! In this manual is if you adhere to these steps that are outlined you will become a more consistent archer because you will have learned above all how to repeat the perfect execution of an archery shot. It’s a short read but with so much knowledge packed into it !! Over the years I reread it not only to reinforce what I know is the correct way to shoot but to get fired up about archery. As you will read you want a shot sequence that is using your core and skeletal structure properly therefore making it much more easier to repeat.I hope this helps in your decision to purchase this fantastic manual.

Worth the read and the money
I am brand new to archery. I heard about this book from forums on the Internet and purchased it from Amazon. I am glad I made that decision. After talking with the pro at our local archery shop, I knew that I would eventually want to shoot a back tension release and Larry Wise outlines a good program that would lead to success. I ordered a bow and in the five weeks spent waiting for it to arrive, I practice with the string loop and my release on a daily basis. It has paid off. I am not there yet but an headed in the right direction. Also, Larry points out the importance of relegating all of components of making a good shot to the subconscious - except for aiming - focusing on the target. I know this to be a sound concept from all the years I spent target shooting with pistols, rifles, and especially shotguns. The book also gives some good advice on how to practice - have a specific goal and concentrate on that one thing. The book is an easy read. I read it the first time in one evening. If you are like me, you will refer back to it frequently. If you are serious about archery, this is a must read.

Excellant archery book
Although I am not a competitive archer and shoot a hunting bow without the type of release mentioned in the book, I found the basic principles used create a good foundation for any type of shooting, regardless of release type or bow. I was very impressed with how the author, though having a strong target bias, included information valuable for any shooter. It has helped me at the local 3D range and shooting at all ranges at static targets. I didn't hunt this year, but I suspect those skills related to shooting would have improved as well. For several of the suggestions in the book, it was worth the price. I review it often as a refresher and seem to find something new each time, to me a halmark of any good instruction book.

I can say that this book offers the best overall explanation of how to master a sport skill ...
I don't know much about archery, but as a teacher, and a coach in another sport for more than 50 years (where some of my athletes have reached the highest international levels), I'm always trying learn from other teachers and coaches. Having read hundreds of books on teaching and coaching, I can say that this book offers the best overall explanation of how to master a sport skill that I have ever seen. Mr. Wise's attention to all the details you must address during the teaching and learning process, and how to approach them, is superb. And his explanation of what your mind should be doing, from when it begins to learn and skill to what it does when you perform, is nothing short of unparalleled in terms of its scope and detail. Whatever your sport may be, whether you are an athlete or coach, you can benefit immensely from this book. From now on, when athletes and coaches ask me what to read to improve their skill and performance, whatever their sport is, this book will be at the top of my list.

So much knowledge in such a small amount of space
This book is amazing. I learned so much more than I ever thought I would. The pictures are dead on for how you should be practicing. If you're interested in taking your shooting skills to the next level this book is it.It really teaches you about Back Tension and how to improve your form and make it repeatable. It makes it much easier to correct some basic problems as well. It can be somewhat technical at times especially when it comes to body mechanics but it does a good job explaining it. I think what I learned that was the most helpful is to relax during the shot.

Must read for anyone wanting to seriously improve their skill
I have been wanting to improve my shooting form, to improve my archery skills, so I purchased this book a while back. I read it at the time, but didn't really apply what I had read, and I have continued to only be a so-so shot with my bow. I recently decided to get serious about learning the back tension method, and purchased a new back tension release and have re-read this book. Wow. I can tell a difference already, although it will take a lot more practice for it to become second nature to me.This book is very well written, with clear simple steps, and detailed explanations of the human anatomy and the optimal stance and form for achieving repeatable and highly accurate shots with your bow. I think this is a great read for any archer, whether you're strictly competition target shooter or a bow-hunter or do a little of both.

not meant for a traditional bow.
I assume it is good for people who shoot fancy compound bows hung about with all kinds of gizmos. But I wish I had known it is not meant for a traditional bow. There was very little that I found applicable. There was good info on body posture, and the why and how of a smooth draw and release. But I don't use, have or want the release device he spent so much time going on about & I don't have or want sights, so the bulk of the book was irrelevant to me. The instructions about keeping back tension were too brief, in my opinion, and too dependent on the release device as a learning aide ( re: if it goes off when it should, apparently that means you did it right... well, I don't have that device, so...) If you want advice on shooting a traditional bow - look elsewhere.

My dad lives this.
Bought this as a gift with another book for my dad. Myself being a qualified Personal trainer, this book and my own abilities has really enabled my dad to get better at archery and stray away from injury. Great book, and really well written.

This ones a keeper!
Here is a book that is worth keeping. This book teaches you proper form and the use of your back muscles. This is a great read if you are new to the sport or an experienced archer who is looking to improve performance. If your shooting skills have been less than what you'd expect, it is a good reference to go back too.

Brilliant!
I'm tempted to give this a horrific review to put people off so I can keep the info to myself! This is a well written concise book, things are well explained and defined making it easy to put into practice. There are no magic wand answers but the building blocks are the with a good step by step guide on how to refine your form
