Do not judge this book by its cover. This is a super collection of the foundational stories of our ancient world. Enjoyable and easy to memorize, I look forward to retelling these to my 5th grader. I also purchased his Greek stories.

Charles Kovacs is the unsung hero of home schooling families who want to use a gentle, Waldorf approach to studying ancient histories.

This is my 4th Charles Kovacs book and I am not disappointed with any of them. He tells his stories very well, drawing the reader into his web and hanging on for every word. I am using this book as a homeschooling resource following the class 5 Steiner curriculum and my son loves listening to these stories. Very well written. There are no illustrations in this book but the quality of the writing is so good that this is not a disadvantage in any way.Similar in quality to Kovacs' Norse myths which my son enjoyed much more than the D'Aulaires version (although this was also good and had lovely illustrations).I can thoroughly recommend this book for Steiner homeschoolers and for anyone interested in these ancient mythologies.

I usually like Mr Kovac's books but I found this one a bit problematic. It is structured in such a way that my child was completely confused about the chronology of ancient civilisations, and it posits views that border on racist, such as all indian people are lazy and like to avoid responsibility because they live in a hot country. It does weave in some factual information on the countries covered and maybe my issue is more with Steiner education in general on this topic since I will not teach my child that Atlantis was a factual place and that people used to do magic and Indian people are closer to magical life and that civilisation developed in the way laid out in this book.

This was an essential volume - thank you.
