Ransom Riggs is Profoundly Thoughtful and Intense
The Peculiar World of Ransom Riggs is (by many professional book review sites) supposedly written for ages 13-17, and usually sports the designation of "Young Adult" literature. I think this rating system is, at best, confusing. Given the content of this trilogy, it all depends largely on the maturity of the young adult, especially the 13 and 14 year olds. Yes there is some profanity in the books and there is quite a bit of descriptive gore and disturbing imagery, though not gratuitously gritty; Riggs is a very unusual writer with a unique and intriguing style of scribing which rises above most "young adult" books, even those of JK Rowling whom I found to be entertaining for my second childhood. Riggs is as peculiar as his characters and I would go so far as to call his writing "literature". He is as imaginative and tongue in cheek as Lewis Carroll and writes with all the literate brevity and believability as Tolkien. This trilogy is genuinely for all ages, especially 17 and up who can appreciate the lyrical wit, the poetic license, and the dark playfulness with which Riggs populates his pages. These are NOT children's stories by any stretch of the imagination. I am over 60 and I am loving these books, glad to have discovered them. For you adults out there, contemplating getting these for yourselves (really), take this test: do you like JRR Tolkien a lot? Are high-brow fantasy and science fiction writers in your wheel house? Do you like historical novels, history in general, and the popular writers of the 19th century? Do you like Kurt Vonnegut and Ray Bradbury? Lastly do you appreciate re-visiting your youth and equally do you appreciate what the youth of today are contending with? If all of the above are true and you have a special place in your heart for the odd and the bizarre (like old Pink Floyd records and stories by Stephen King and Anne Rice), if you like to voyage into the nether regions of speculative fiction, these books are definitely for you.The trilogy are chock full of peculiar (everyone's new favorite word with these books) photographs, some of them can be disturbing. Riggs second avocation after writing is photography, and he has used this as a riveting feature to not only augment the tales but to amplify them into even more fantastical realism. The trilogy box comes with a bonus package of more photographs that are fascinating and make excellent markers to keep places in the book you might (will) want to revisit! The books are bound beautifully and the case housing them is handsome and built to last. Purchase the Peculiar Trilogy this way and you will have a lifetime personal favorite for your shelf that will no doubt outlive us all. Oh, and like a lot of really really good books, you will want to re-read these, probably more than twice. Ransom Riggs is going to be a memorable author down the decades and beyond, that is certain, this is no pulp fiction.Final Note, try to avoid reading plot descriptive reviews, even if you have seen the movie version of the first book, the spoilers will, well, spoil the journey of surprises (and the book has many more features that could not be presented even by the wonderful Tim Burton). Parents, if your young adult reader had issues with Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows, or finds "dark" storytelling a little too nightmarish, you might want to consider letting them mature a bit longer before taking the step into this peculiar world. Profanity in the books is limited to what is often deemed acceptable for older teens. Use your best judgement, or read it first! You get to treat yourself! Highly recommended for young adults 16 - 96.

Great series, but parents use discretion for pre-teens
Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children is a gripping adventure which I bought to read with my daughters, as many reviewers said it was like Harry Potter, a series they absolutely love. My daughters are pre-teens, but have enjoyed many young adult books, so I made the decision to give this series a try too.We all loved the first book in the set and most of the second book. It wasn't quite as magical as Harry Potter in the sense that the focus of the magic and paranormal events is quite dark. The Harry Potter series is balanced with the benevolent and the beautiful. Attacks and battles happen in Harry Potter, but not in every other chapter as in Miss Peregrine's Children (as we've read so far.) Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children series tends more toward the morbid and the mysterious, with lots of blood, attacks and bodies. Now my girls are going through a "spooky stuff and bad guys" phase (as a follow in from fairies and fashion) which is why I got this series, to be honest. They're quite happy to get all this inspiration for their drawings and games. But if you have children who are more sensitive, keep in mind that this series does include gore enough to cause nightmares and anxiety.Personally I have found the books too violent for my tastes. I was a little uneasy about this given I was reading the book to my girls, but it didn't seem to bother them. Now we're not a family who has a problem with profanity, but I think this series is a little heavy on it for pre-teen readers, and this is something I would have liked to have known beforehand. My girls thought the language was hilarious (possibly they thought their Mummy reading such words aloud was even more funny) and we haven't had any problems with them copying it or anything. I think it's fine for teenagers who are suited to some strong language and high stakes, but I know some parents will be concerned about their teens reading a series of this caliber.Unfortunately when we got half way through the last chapter in the second book, my children asked me to stop reading the series they had enjoyed so far. The stakes had got too high for them and the death of one of the newer characters whom they'd become very fond of upset them. We have a plan for me to read ahead and let them know what I think before we read the rest of the series, as they really want to know what happens and love looking at the pictures and wondering what the characters will do next.In conclusion, a brilliant story, but intense with dark themes. Wonderful, lovable characters that kids will relate to, but fairly grown-up themes. Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children gets full marks from me for originality, being fascinating, gripping storytelling and lots of funny moments. But it's probably not appropriate for the sensitive teen or for pre-teens who are just beginning to explore older kids' books. If your pre-teen wants to read this series, read with them or ahead of them to make sure you think they'll be alright with it, as you know your child best.

Perfect condition!
I ordered this as a requested birthday present for my teen daughter. She loved the movie and wanted to read the books. I’m all for whatever it takes to get her to turn off the screens and read! I’d pay whatever! Thankfully, this boxed set of Miss Peregrines Peculiar Children was a great price. The books and cardboard holder arrived in excellent condition and my daughter hasn’t stopped reading since she got them. I love Amazon for books!

Superbe coffret

Fantastic and Fascinating!
Hugely original storyline, great variety of well defined characters both likable and otherwise. I will not be a spoiler, the reader deserves the opportunity to discover the entire story for themselves. Great book for all ages, but parents of preteens may want to read it first and decide if their child is mature enough for some of the violent scenes (not gratuitous or gory) I think that readers of the Harry Potter books will be thrilled to read this adventure fantasy .
