He is the most feared assassin in all of Japan, known only as the Lone Wolf. Pushing his young son along the back-roads of feudal Japan in a heavily armed baby-cart, he strikes fear into the hearts of evil-doers everywhere - as long as someone can come up with his fee. Nothing, not even the legions of a mad shogun, hordes of Yagyu ninjas, or the undead, can stop him! This collector's set contains the complete series on 5 DVDs. From the explosive first film that became a cult-classic, to the snow-capped finale, there is never a dull moment for this father and son team.

Amazon....now selling bootlegs by the local gas station.
Amazon actually shipped me a cheap bootleg for $25. I was blown away. Something you might expect from a 3rd party seller, but to be ripped off my Amazon itself is just crazy. They sent me a burned disc with a cheap printed cover, trying to pass it off as the real thing. No where in the description did it mention it was a DVD-R. I used to get stuff like this from a guy at work, but he only charged 5 bucks. Personally. I dont get on a legit shopping website to purchase bootlegs for exorbitant amounts of money. I could just do that at home. So, beware. Shogun Assassin is an awesome movie and the only time a foreign film being tampered with by Americans was a GOOD thing. Shogun Assassin is one of the best samurai movies of all time and a great introduction to Japanese films, and it was the film that sent me down the 70s Japanese-cult-film-rabbit-hole. Just do yourself a favor and look on Ebay or just buy the criterion collection box set of Lone Wolf and Cub. It contains all 6 films AND the English dubbed Shogun Assassin version.

Illegal copy that dosen't ever play. Do not buy from this seller.
This is a bootleg. A illegally made copy of the original. It is absolutely unbelievable that Amazon allowed this to be sold. It's a illegal reproduction and the disc doesn't even play.

The ShoGun
The shogun assassin in my books proves to be the best Americanized adaption of anything. Although there's not much of a differences between lone wolf and cub and this. The shogun assassin is just built by using the first 10 minutes of the first movie and then sticking it into the second as well as dubbing and shooting a lot more graphic killing scenes and new music. The film really just works as a Japanese western about the shogun a man killing to avenge the death of his wife. Or otherwise it is an Exploitation film. Long ago there was a great samurai warrior who served his Shogun honorably. The Shogun however grew paranoid as he became more and more senile. The Shogun sought to destroy all those who might stand to oppose his rule, and so he sent his ninja spies to the samurai's home. The ninjas failed to kill the samurai, but did kill his beloved wife. From then on, the samurai swore on his honor to seek out the Shogun and avenge the death of his love. The samurai roams the countryside with his toddler son taking on mercenary work for money until the final battle with the Shogun's three Masters of Death. I got to hand it to them they did a much better job then anyone would think for an Americanized adaption. Lone wolf and cub as well as the manga's will still be always the best Japanese's Exploitation westerns ever made.

Blu-ray is a gorgeous remastering for this cult exploitation classic!
Shogun Assassin is a favorite 80s guilty pleasure that was actually edited together from the first two films of a classic Japanese movie series called Lone Wolf And Cub. The film was then dubbed in English and given a new synthesizer score and released by Roger Corman’s New World Pictures. The film tells of a master samurai (Tomisaburo Wakayama) who is betrayed by his crazed Shogun and marked for death. During an assassination attempt, his wife is killed and now he travels the Japanese countryside with his toddler son, Daigoro, working as a sword for hire and constantly battling the Shogun’s sons and scores of ninja sent to kill him. Shogun Assassin is a deliriously fun and blood soaked roller coaster ride that is about 10% plot and 90% fight scenes as Lone Wolf continuously is set upon by the Shogun’s killers and their subsequent and gruesome dispatching by his sword. Especially amusing are a squad of sexy female ninja, Lone Wolf’s showdown with The Brothers Of Death and the fact that Daigoro’s baby carriage has more weapons then James Bond’s Astin Martin. The action is fast and furious and filled with spurting blood and flying limbs and is a real blast. Now considered one of the greatest exploitation films of all time, and it is a title this wildly entertaining sword and samurai flick rightfully deserves. A real blast I was fortunate enough to see in a theater with a rambunctious audience back in 1980. The 30th Anniversary blu-ray from AnimEgo is an absolutely gorgeous re-mastering and a wonderful way to enjoy this cult classic!

Edited in a fashion where the characters and story line are Original from the Japanese screenplays
Technically 4.5I have the original Lone Wolf & Cub series of 6 films in Japanese with subtitles with the exception of 6 & maybe 5 (which were over the top not in terms of violence, just taking on 100-500 guys in snow or surrounded on his 1800s James Bond baby cart was hysterically ridiculous). That being said this version isn’t a mere dubbing but reordering of scenes with changes in the story line. The dubbing isn’t the cheesy style 1970s Brother productions but done well). It was refreshing and entertaining , but not enough to motivate me for Volume 2,3 or 4. DVD looks great on a low end 4K TV. On my QLED HDR not so much.I have the DVD versionFor the Japanese originals on 1080p they look great. I’m glad it hasn’t been politically assasinated. If you’re a fan “The Hanzo Razor” trilogy currently on HBO MAX....

If not for this film, most people wouldn't know about LWC at all.
Tom Hanks - Road to Perdition is based on this film. Tarantino inspiration. Some compare Shogun Assassin and Flashing Swords (part two or technically part three of Lone Wolf) with Lone Wolf and Cub, I would not. View it as a stand-alone picture. If not for this film, most people wouldn't know about LWC at all, myself included. There are lots of people that won't watch sub-titled movies and this is a great english introduction to get them into the whole mythos. I saw this in the seventies at a grind-house in Oakland, CA and it never left my mind. Jump ahead 10 years later and I find the American release of the comics and soon the entire manga series and the rest of the films on VHS from Animego. I own original posters from Japan, english and Japanes manga, you name it, I've collected it - obsessively! I almost forgot, full back tattoo, 1/4 sleeves and chest scallops ala yakuza style, all LWC themed.

A real gem
I have the Blu-ray versions. But my collection wasn’t complete without this box set. Some of the greatest Samurai action of all time. Tomisaburo Wakayama the Greatest at Kenjitsu and Iaido. Japanese Sword Play. His brother Katsu Shintaro from the Zatoichi Movies is equally talented as his older brother.

A splendid magical gorry film with morals
I first saw this film on TV late one night and was so engrossed, it's unusual, gripping, poetic, a Father's love for his son, the loss of a wife and yes there is bloodshed and slaughter but you find yourself peaking through your fingers because you want this man a Father to succeed, to win to triumph, the relationship with his son is gentle but firm teaching him strength and courage sometimes you think this child is too young to understand but the child is his Father's son, at one point I had to giggle as this slayer walks quietly, silently, no words no sounds, going about his day troubling no one, but trouble finds him, it seeks him and he obliges, this deadly assassin walks around pushing his son in a pram just walking and walking until someone makes the mistake of thinking this man with his son, is an easy target. One of my favourite films is the bodyguard Kevin & Whitney seen it countless times but it was only last year that I realized the scene where they come out of the cinema, they were watching this film, and Whitney's words... "Well he sure creamed em all in the end".... It really is an iconic film which I didn't know when I first saw it on TV, I loved it so much that I bought the dvd then discovered it was loved by many around the world, one of my faves of all time because of its originality, it's uniqueness, it's dramatic scenes this genre you may think oh no blood and gore but the morality and sense of duty and love for his wife and son, and his seemingly justifiable need for revenge underpins the narrative there's a reason for his brutal slayings, I'm a girl and I loved it

Classic film, made virtually unwatchable due to totally wrong ratio.
No matter how you set the ratio on your player, about 10% on each side of the film is cut off, it is nothing to do with how your display is set, the actual film has been put on the DVD with 20% of the shot missing (even during opening credits half the names are off the screen). Obviously meant to be wide screen but improperly cut to fit the wrong ratio. Unwatchable unless you want to get a headache and hardly know whats going on.

Cult Classic....
Cult classic made up of the first 2 films in the Lone Wolf and Cub series. Shame this version is WIDescrEEN and cuts of the edges of the film. Low quality mass-produced edition to cash in with the Kill Bill cameo. Still for the price you can't really expect much more, I would recommend getting the Lone Wolf films as standard to get the full experience as this is also poorly edited for the US market back it the late 70's Early 80's Kung Fu craze and the story jumps about a bit at the start (Due to it using 12 minutes of the first film)

unwatchable
The aspect ratio in this film cannot be changed making the viewing experience horrendous as it cuts off so much of the picture. Really p*$$×d as it's almost unwatchable.

Martial Arts Memories
This film is a classic eighties martial arts film primarily involving swordplay, it is very dated now but that is only to be expected, i remember watching this film as a youth ( too many years ago to mention ). If you are a die hard enthusiast of the martial arts then this is worth watching for the early fight choreography alone, there are no recognised stars in the film but that makes it all the more appealing.
