Q: Are all the grounding pins oriented the same? I have a similar product with the pins up on one side and down on the other.

The grounding pins are NOT oriented the same. I am returning it for this reason. If you have the pins on the back side at the bottom (down) as would be normal when plugged into the wall, then the grounding pins on the right side of the device are also down (the same as the back) but the pins on the left side are the opposite (at the top of each plug). I bought this because I have two items that both have 90-degree plugs on the that I need to plug into this outlet. Since you cannot do that with two 90-degree plugs on a standard outlet (one above the other) because the cord gets in the way, I thought this would be a solution to that. Until I got it and found that they inexplicably made one side of this with the pins in the opposite direction. Also, it does not show this in the pictures. It may seem like it shows both sides, but if you look carefully, it only shows the right hand side of the device. The last picture looks like it shows the left side, but the device is actually turned upside down in that image and so you are seeing the right side again.

Q: Once plugged in how far does this outlet stick out? does it stick out more than a hug-a-plug? thanks!

From the outlet plate, it sticks out 1 3/4 inch at the furthest point and is slightly rounded on the end side. It is the same length as the outlet plate. I'm not sure what a hug-a-plate is, but hopefully this answers your question.

Q: Does this have a built in surge protector?

Nope - just a straight up multi-way outlet. I use it in the kitchen for all the little things I don't use often but would definitely overpower and kill a surge protector.
