Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 - The Complete Series - DVD

Makes you realise how limited Disney is.
Animation and sound are top notch. "A" grade stuff. Very many scenes look like shot for shot copies of the original...this is a great remake of that original story. The changes, where they happen, are well thought out and arguably improve on the original. That being said...it's still a bit dated by modern anime standards. There is also a lack of decent extras. If you want some old school storytelling with state of the art animation then this is it. At this price you can't go wrong. If you're coming to this story for the first time after seeing the same Disney film again and again and again then a whole wonderful world of animation is ahead of you.

Best remake ever
While the story has some big differences to the original and this version is shorter it is a great remake which remains faithful to the essence and heart of the original iteration.

Has subtitles/close captions
Can confirm that it has close captions for Deaf and Hard of hearing viewers.

Great update to the 70's classic anime
These thoughts are based on watching the series via Funimation online streaming:The anime Uchū Senkan Yamato came out in the mid Seventies and 2199 is a loving remake - the storyline generally follows the original and many shots/scenes are recreated but with a much higher standard of animation.Space battles and vehicles are rendered via CGI whilst characters are hand drawn, though the overall drawing style is maintained so there isn't a jarring difference. I particularly like the method whereby ships appearing in a static scene have the CGI model rendered in 2D and masses of detail added in a process the artists called "Detail-Up".I've watched the series in both dub & sub, and the English voice work is very good and a good match to the characters. If you've no prior experience with StarBlazers/Space Battleship Yamato, I'd say once you get over the fairly silly premise of naval battles in space and humanity's antagonists basically being SpaceNazis you've got a really good sci-fi series. It's not often I watch a series more than once, but I'm itching to watch it once more when my BluRay arrives.I'll update this review to include disk features etc. once it has been released.Edit: there are a few special features included (which I’ve not watched yet) - “The Newest Frontier: Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199”, a commentary for Episode 9, and some promo videos. Audio options are English 5.1 or Japanese 2.0 (with English subs) - no other subtitle or audio options that I could find. Not sure what the music is on the main menu of disk 1, sounds like it could be some of the funky disco that got released for the original version of Yamato :)
