detailed and fascinating history of a very rare Luftwaffe fighter prototype!
First volume in a new "Secret Projects.." book series from UK publisher Mortons is this new history of the Blohm and Voss BV 155. According to his publisher's blurb author Dan Sharp has an 'unhealthy interest in primary and archival sources' and his book "..sheds new light on the development of the type based entirely on primary source research". In fact, of the 114 glossy, slightly smaller than A-4 format pages, four or five are given over to a listing of all the documents consulted so that the resulting work can be assumed to be both accurate and transparent. At least the reader will know where to look to verify the accuracy of the developmental timeline that Sharp has compiled. The Me 155 started out being essentially a Bf 109 with new wings/undercarriage conceived for combat against high-flying US bombers over Europe but what ended up as the BV 155 shared few components with the 109 series, after the project was taken over by Hamburg-based ship and seaplane builders Blohm and Voss as Messerschmitt were forced to focus all their energies on readying the Me 262 for service. The book features new photos of the last surviving example of the type in the world. And it's in remarkably good condition - NASM's BV 155 V2 at Silver Hill is in deep storage and inaccessible to the public. I found this title to a be a fascinating overview of the project - there has been nothing on the Blohm and Voss BV 155 since the Monogram Close-Up of 1990 by Thomas H Hitchcock (that I'm aware of). Completed with plenty of photos, plans and six pages of profile artwork.
