The Afterlife Experiments: Breakthrough Scientific Evidence of Life After Death

An interesting and informative book for anyone interested in science and research into the afterlife.
I recently read and reviewed another book by this author (The Sacred Promise) and liked his scientific approach to studying esoteric topics. I decided to purchase this well researched and fascinating 376 page softcover book (The afterlife experiments: Breakthrough scientific evidence of life after death by Gary E. Schwartz, Ph.D. with William L. Simon) and loved reading this volume. Like the author’s other books he emphasizes following the traditional scientific method in all his research projects. The author is not afraid of skeptics who are close minded to anything which does not match their own personal belief system. I admit to being of the same mind set for most of my life; however, now that I am in my senor years I find myself looking at energy healing and NDE (Near Death experiences) more objectively. The topic researched in this incredible book is the possibility that our consciousness may live on after the body dies. In other words, there may be indeed some kind of life after death and we may be able to contact our relatives who passed on to another dimension. I used to be a diehard atheist but have now turned into an agnostic when it comes to some esoteric issues. This easy to read and understand book covers the following material: Part one (You don’t find a mission-a mission finds you) covers the beginning of the research into “soul science.” The second part (The HBO dream-team experiment) explains the HBO involvement in making a film about the research done in this area. The third part (The Miraval silent-sitter experiment) focuses on designing other strict procedures for several other research tests. The fourth part (The Canyon ranch totally silent sitter) covers further experiments and studies. The final part (Discovering the larger reality) goes into various factors to consider doing these research projects. The appendix sections should also be read because they deal with many issues when studying these unusual topics. In conclusion, if you are scientific minded and a seeker of knowledge and open minded to a wide range of possibilities the universe offers, this is a must read book. It may not change your mind about life after death, but it will make you think more deeply on the subject.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Martial Art and Warrior Haiku and Senryu)

Opens your eyes
The author wrote the book to address our intellect, not our emotions. There is nothing "misty" and "spiritual" about his writing style or his facts. He is a scientist who, with professional hoax-exposers (hired to spot any funny business or "magic tricks"), put five psychic mediums through a series of tests to either prove or disprove their claims that they communicate with the deceased. Then they tested the results against a control group of non-psychics, and reported their findings. The book begins with what, at first sight, appears to be a self-congratulatory chapter where the author seemingly brags about his background, education, and standing within the scientific and academic community. As dry as that is, I got the sense that he wasn't bragging, nor was he being defensive. He was simply trying to demonstrate to us he that isn't a kook, and was looking for the truth whatever that is. He put his career at risk to complete this experiment, and was merely telling us he risked quite a lot.His conscientious attention to detail and completely balanced approach to the experiment appealed to me. I'm not looking for the misty and the spiritual; I want facts as much as he does, and I'm less concerned with what the truth is than with what can be proved. If something can be proved, I get over myself and accept it whatever it is and regardless of how sincerely I wanted the truth to be something else. So an approach that others might find dry works well for me - and was particularly fascinating because his Scientist Hat kept slipping momentarily as the author got more flabbergasted and excited with the results, and with the careful calculations of probability (he explains them to you so you don't think he's merely tossing numbers) that suggest to a factor of one in hundreds of millions that this is no coincidence.Someone else might be looking for a book that supports their opinion that psychic stuff is all smoke and mirrors. Or, they're looking for someone who is going to stroke their need to keep spiritualism mysterious and creepy. If you're that person, avoid this book. If you're up for a challenge to your way of thinking, however, read it. I don't think you'll find a flaw - though the author repeatedly invites you to look for one.Opinion: This is one of those times when society is going to have to shift its paradigm and accept the fact that the world is NOT flat, and that the sun does NOT circle the earth. It's tough, but the human race has done it before and survived. There are now reams of scientific data that indicate that there is life after death, and that the dead are around us and communicate if we can, or are willing to listen.I saw the documentary of this experiment when it aired on HBO some years back. It blew me away to the extent that I bought a ticket to a John Edward seminar to see for myself. And I did. The stuff is real, like it or not, and it has now been scientifically tested and documented. Believe it or don't believe it, but you can't change the results or make them go away. That's all this book does: reveal the results of an amazing and mind-boggling laboratory test.Rejecting the data because it is "saner" not to believe it is the antithesis of critical thinking, and is anti-science. There are those for whom NO evidence will EVER be sufficient because they already know all the truths of the universe (they'll tell you so!), and they happen to know life after death is hogwash. Let them. The author's tests were increasingly more stringent, and he's continuing to look for ways to improve them. Even without a perfectly airtight set of tests, the results suggest that 100% airtight testing won't change anything: mediums will still be able to communicate with the dead. Just read the book, and reach your own conclusions.

Fascinating Book
Dr Schwartz's efforts to prove survival of bodily death by testing well known mediums makes for fascinating reading. Whether or not the "deceased" provide information we are interested in or not is totally irrelevant, if they are communicating, they exist. The fact that so many debunking organizations have attacked this book probably means the author has made great progress in his efforts to prove survival of consciousness. I do wish Dr. Schwartz had addressed the possibilty that the information the mediums received during readings could have been from some other paranormal source, that's the only reason I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5.

An amazing book
Amazing experiments that offer proof of our eternal existence. The author begins with a healthy skeptical attitude and through his experiments proves the continued existence of our consciousness. Of course many scientists will not accept the hypothesis but those with an open mind will come to only one conclusion.

Wonderfully compelling and Truly Staggering
This book is an absolute must read for anyone interested in exploring the possibility of an afterlife, but particularly with reference to mediumship.Prof. Gary Schwartz is a consumate and incredibly well qualified scientist, with great integrity and courage to explore a topic mainstream science ignores and codemns as fraudulent. This book has totally shaken the very foundations of my world view. It has had me laughing and crying, and really examining what I thought I previously knew. All for the better. This work is truly astounding, and demands to be read by skeptics and believers alike, as it cannot be ignored. The science is solid, and the message profound.Absolutely first rate.
