A very very good movie from Edward Dmytryk: Peppard, Ladd, Baker
To me The Carpetbaggers is a sensational movie. There are lots of great things in this movie (storytelling - acting - cinematography) and there is George Peppard handsome and talented beyond the pale. Every frame he's in makes of The Carpetbaggers an erotic movie in my eyes. As Jonas Cord Jr., George is a halo of light, in turn mean and vulnerable. One of the sexiest scenes takes place at the beginning of the movie between him and Carroll Baker. He arrives at the house, talks to the black servant, faces the staircase, walks up to Rina Marlowe's bedroom and then leaves her totally sexually frustrated. George Peppard uses his supermodel body in various ways. The love/hate scene with Carroll on the bed is an iconic moment in the film. He desires her but forces himself to walk out on her.One of my favorite scenes is when he drives into Morgan Studios at night in THAT white Mercedes - and the music! The way The Carpetbaggers was filmed is very special because the audience is part of the scene; it's like you're in the movie with the actors. There is no screen, no gap. The audience is taken in in this saga. I had the same feeling with House of Cards by John Guillermin.Harold Robbins also wrote the Betsy (with Lawrence Oliver and Tommy Lee Jones). Some say his style is trashy but I like that kind of trashy. After all, one might say The Three Musketeers is a trashy royalist soap opera based in the XVII century.George Peppard is in my eyes the most gorgeous creature to have walked the Earth since the dinosaurs. I'm in love with him and somehow he changed my life. I like EVERYTHING about him. His face, his body, the way he walks, his voice, his hair, his personality.

bold and brassy like the score
Forty years after first appearing 'The Carpetbaggers' still retains a pretty good punch and is well worth looking at. Stylish and with very good production values it's principal attractions include a fast moving and sharp script from John Michael Hayes, a memorable well played final performance from Alan Ladd, and Elmer Bernstein ' s driving score. Slightly overplayed and dated is George Peppard in the key role as Jonas Cord in a part that tends to be too one dimensional. He does however get to play opposite a range of great performers including the beautiful Carroll Baker, Bob Cummings at his best and the ever reliable Martin Balsam in a good role as a movie producer.Perhaps there is too much talk at the expense of the action, and at times the film does need to be opened up, but in general it rattles along at a pace. Set in the twenties and thirties there's not a great feeling created to capture the period, with Peppard especially looking very 1960s. Minor quibbles aside it remains entertaining and enjoyable if not exactly great cinema. And with Bernstein ' s blowsy theme to push her along there's always the delightful Miss Baker.

Great transfer of a fine film!
This Panavision epic has aged very well. A stunning performance from the late George Peppard, admirably supported by a strong cast, brings Harold Robbin's sordid tale of ambition and self doubt, sanitised but still quite powerfully, to the big screen. The DVD transfer is excellent from a first rate print and both audio and video are of a remarkably high standard. Although unrelentingly hard-edged, with scarcely one likeable character and a rather unconvincing ending, for almost 3 hours the movie holds your attention and "delivers the goods" in a remarkably direct way. Alan Ladd in his last screen role and Carol Baker are very impressive and Elmer Bernstein's score provides a rather dated but forceful commentary on the action. The film's "frankness" played a major role in changing period censorship laws though today its sex references would raise few eyebrows. Still in its presentation of the life of a damaged and ruthless man it is undoubtedly impressive. Recommended.

the carpetbaggers
2.35.1 ratio.spanish subs can lose subs english dialogue.3 stars more to with picture seemed a little out of focus.4 for the film just wanted to see this as i remember being on the tellly in the seventies and not allowed to see it as it was concidered adult viewing.does seem some what lewd but very dated, this is in that peyton place vain of film making peppard the son left every thing after his father dies through his goading and no sorrow so no love lost i would say the the book would be more satisfying as this trys to cram a lot of years into a couple of hours and peppards about face just does not ring true after his head to head with alan ladd also loose ends such as nevadas marriage to carrol baker by the end were they still married.why was he not around as she slowly went down the pan.just dose not quite make sense.nice fight at the end.and peppard playing the usual peppard bastard which he did so well.their are references to howard hughes.i suppose for the early sixties this is tawdry stuff with incest all be it with his step mother, hookers and blue movies again talking in riddles see the film and you see what i am talking about little ones would not understand it so good aftrnoon melodrama.

The Carpetbaggers.

Great movie
Based very loosely on Howard Hughes, this movie has it all. Great Hollywood entertainment. Interesting to compare movie making of the not so distant past with the crap that Hollyweird makes today.
