4X Magnabrite Bright Field Dome Magnifier 4.5 Inches by Magnabrite

Good but with significant limitations - PLEASE READ!
My father owns a smaller version of this magnifier - 2.5", and loves it as it is lightweight and convenient.Well, he had high hopes for this bigger size 4.5" dome magnifier in spite of its hefty price tag.Considering its large diameter, he was hoping to read a newspaper text moving the dome down in vertical direction only. However, how big was a disappointment when we learned that (apparently due to a high 4X magnification) the effective field of view of the lens is less than 3 inches of original text, which isn't enough even for reading father's newspaper. That means he had to move a heavy lens (almost 2 pounds!) not just vertically but horizontally, which defeats a purpose of buying this expensive big diameter lens.Besides, again due to a 4x magnification and a spherical shape, the lens has significant distortion towards the edges which makes reading uncomfortable and eyes tired. Most other dome magnifiers have 2X magnification which has wider field of view and more comfortable to eyes.Returning a lens was a breeze (we lost about $14 on shipping), so if you inclined of buying the dome lens for trial, you can do so for a small risk fee. Despite limitations, the manufacture quality of the lens is superb!Hope this review was helpful, and good luck with your choice!

Occasional sliding instead of constant lifting
Hands-free (if on a fairly level surface), unlike page magnifiers or handle-type magnifying glasses. No part of it has a shading effect or a sharp edge. Usually sufficient magnification, but can be lifted for even more. Much easier to grip and lift than dome paper weights – due to its vertical wall – but heavy. You’d want a smaller one for your backpack (but you’d need to move it faster when reading). Completely clear (unlike many other glass-type products that arrive with a colored tint). Great for narrow columns such as phone books. Highly resistant to chipping, scratches, or smudges (with normal use). Pricey, but a great permanent tool with no close competitor. Others are a lot smaller.

Highly recommend.
We use this magnifier for reading very difficult construction specifications. Don't know what I would do with out it!!! Highly recommend.
