They basically die from internal bleeding, some bait blocks do the job in one feeding and other bait blocks require multiple feedings. Rodents are like people when they feel sick, they go to a place where they feel comfortable (normally where they nest) and expire either there or close to where they nest. Yes, it possible your cat could get one. Read the label of any poison's you use. They all have warnings about pets and children and the treatments in case of poisonings. The bait stations tell you about placement of the stations as well. Read the labels and instructions of anything you use and you should be fine.
