how do I know how large  the links should be? 3.0, 3.25, 3.80?? I have a shepherd.

I use the 2.25mm on all my shepherds and do the same in the classes I teach, for all except the largest dogs (newfoundland, etc.).  The 2.25mm will give you much better control as there are more contact points, and allow for better size adjustments as it can be done in smaller increments.  Many of my students get rid of their 3.0 and 3.25mm collars once they have tried the 2.25mm.  Just add more links as needed to make it large enough; it works fine for my 90lb male.

Is this a genuine herm sprenger prong collar?  it says in the description that the manufacturer is coastal pet products and review claim it's not oem.

Just to follow up on my previous answer. I received my third collar today and two of the three were not only the wrong size (3mm instead of 2.25mm) but I am certain they were also NOT geniune Herm Sprenger products and made in Germany even though they are stamped as such. First off, the genuine 2.25mm collar i received has proper tags with Herm Sprenger branding, instructions, specifications, etc. The two incorrect sized knockoffs came in plastic ziplock bags that have stickers that say "made in china". The biggest and maybe the most important sign off a knockoff is that the prongs on the Herm Sprenger are slightly beveled or rounded. The knockoffs are flat on the ends as though they have been cut and not finished so they are more apt to actually pinch your dog rather than provide a proper correction without harming them. I contacted Amazon today to report this and they were very helpful and are sending me a fourth collar and trying to determine why there are issues with sending the proper size as well as a genuine item. If you order this item please inspect it thoroughly and I suggest not putting it on your dog unless you are certain you have received a genuine collar. Hope this helps.

Are the reviews correct that this is not the genuine herm sprenger collar made in germany?

I have an old (25 years) Herm Sprenger collar in a smaller size. I ordered this one which is 3.0mm. After reading all these complaints that they were not genuine & there was a pasted tag on there saying it was made in I was anxious to see if it was true. The description says made in Germany. If you look at the link where you attach the leash it will say "Germany stamped into the metal". It is authentic...just read the stamped words on the link to be sure!

Question 4

How many links come with this collar? Is it better to order a larger collar and remove links? Is the actual chain shorter the smaller the collar?

Accepted Answer

There are ten links on the collar.  The larger size collars are made from a larger diameter wire.  They also have 10 links, but everything is bigger, including the depth of the prong.  If you want the smaller links, you should order extra links to make the collar longer.
