Very Good
I'm not a cook or a classically-trained chef or anything like that. HOWEVER, a few weeks ago I ran into a YT channel that is a take on this story (the channel is called The Anti-Chef and the series is Jamie&Julia)...the dude is hilarious and the vids are well-done! Eventually, some commentor mentioned this movie/book. I remembered hearing the title years ago but had no idea what it was about. This is a cute movie....certainly something that would be great on a date-night. Meryl Streep was beyond excellent! I wasn't as interested in the Julie character, but that's just me.

Contains more than meets the eye
We found this show to be very entertaining, informative, and inspiring.Meryl Streep's performance of Julia is absolutely magicalThe movie is well woven together, presenting two seperate stories at the same time. Here is the true story of Julia Child with her husband Paul (Stanley Tucci),and their life in Paris in the 1950's.The story focuses on the struggles and eventsthat brought Julia's famous cookbook into existence.Paralleled with the true story of a struggling writer, Julie Powell (Amy Adams)who pledges herself to prepare the entire 524 recipes of Julia Child's cookbook"Mastering the art of Freach cooking", with-in one year. Some trivia, and moments of the movie that brings a smile.1. A wonderful comment made by Julia while taking a class for professionnel cooksat the Le Cordon Blew, "My teacher moves so quickly I'm sometimes lost. But I'm way ahead of the others in the class, all of them men,and all of them very unfriendly untill they discovered I was fearless.Something I realized about the same time they did.2. Julia was committed to being sure her cookbook would makeFrench cooking accessible to Americans who do not have cooks.Julia's opinion about a dish having to look and taste perfect."Perfection? - even if it isn't, never apopogize, no excuses,no explanations, after all no one knows what you intended it to be".3. Boeuf Bourguignon was the first dish that Judith Jones the editorof "Mastering the art of Freach cooking" perpared. That was the convincing moment to publish the book.4. The beautiful love song the movie ends with is "Time after time" by Margaret Whitting. It can be found on a Capitol/EMI 2009 collection of her music here on Amazon.5. Some KEY points of cooking from the show are -If you don't dry meat it won't brown properly, and mushroons won't brownif they aren't dried and have room left open around them in the pan.6. Paul is quoted as saying "Your book is a work of genius, your book is going to change the world. And indeed it has!"Mastering the art of French cooking" is in it's 49th printing. This is an engaging movie, excellently directed, and preformed. This is an instant classic. A great date night film
My wife and I decide to buy a film based on how much (at least one of us) likes it and if we’ll watch it at least 3 times. For me, Julie & Julia fits the bill. My wife is not as big a fan. But when Amazon had a good price, I decided to grab it. I’ve already seen it more than 3 times and do enjoy, but will have to admit, I much prefer the Julia to the Julie side of the story. Let’s face it, Meryl is one of the greatest of all time. The story here unfolds as a back and forth between the life of Julia Childs and her husband during their years in France, then back in the states. She’s pre-well, herself. That world famous chef has not been found yet. She finds herself here, in this story as she needs to find ways to stay busy. As she loves to eat - and where better to eat than France - she decides to learn to cook... and a legend is born. The relationship with Paul Childs, her loving husband, is the charming element here - these two actors are on point and are so worth the time (and money) alone! The Julie side... okay, I will never knock the hard work of actors, writers, directors... I can’t get into this side of things as much. The idea is she too needs a way to spend her time, decides to make all of Julia Child’s recipes, and deals with life post-9/11. Not my cup of tea, but still, part of the film.In the end, my wife and I love the time together watching a movie - it’s one of our favorite date night activities. And Julie & Julia is a nice way to do that. Yep, I’m more likely to end up watching alone (she likes the Julie side even less than I do), but when we do enjoy, it’s a nice, charming, sweet movie... and spending time with Julie Childs is a nice trip...

Enchanting absolutely enchanting
I stumbled over this movie by chance and what an enriching find. It's a positive and encouraging story ... actually two biographies no less. This movie is all about food and they translate this subject visually so well, you can almost taste, smell the food they are talking about / cooking in the movie. Furthermore, this is a great biography movie how two normal people, like you and me, discover their calling in life or just simply their passion / a purpose. I love Julia Child's story that even in the less likely stage and circumstances in life, you can find your calling. Its never too late and you should definitely never give up. Opportunities are not tied to young age but your will of successeding. Meryl Street as usual excels in her performance, as does Stanley Tucci and the husband of 'Julie'. Amy Adams, in my view, could have played with more gusto and less whiny. My very manly partner had been resisting this movie for a while, one day he was bored .... well and the rest is history, he loves the movie. In fact he joined me at my cooking classes and now enjoys cooking himself! In my view this is a big impact after watching one movie.I can highly recommend Julie and Julia.

Excellent film for lovers of food, Paris or both.
I discovered this film by chance having never heard of Julia Child or her work and in the belief that Elizabeth David had worked largely alone to bring French food to English speaking countries in the 50s and 60s. Both David and Child have clearly been extremely influential, Child perhaps is better known in the United States than in England (or perhaps I just missed the reviews). The film is based on the story of a young woman employed at a call centre who dreams of becoming a writer. As the sleeve notes state she decides that she will cook the entire Child repertoire and report her experiences on her blog. As time passes and new dishes come and go Julie becomes increasingly obsessed by Julia Child and her relationship suffers. In parallel the film flips back to Paris in the 50s where Julia Child is the wife of an Embassy worker, large and dominating in appearance, she enrols at the Cordon Bleu cookery school really for want of something to do. When Child decides to do something she puts all of her enormous energy into her project. In time she meets two French women who have been attempting to collate a recipe book and the film follows the highs and lows of this relationship, rejection of the book and then the search for a publisher which is eventually successful.I don't think I've given away anything here that isn't in the publicity material for the film and I won't spoil the fun of others by describing the plot further. This is not a film that gallops at great pace but it is well acted and evocative of both current life and of life for a certain kind of woman/wife in the 1950s.If you are interested in French cuisine, in Paris and the methods of the Cordon Bleu school, in blogging or in how dreams can turn to obsessions then the modest price of this film would make a good investment.

Really don't bother
Absolutely dire and tedious - Julie a young American decides to cook all the recipes of a 50s cook (Julia - Meryl Streep) and do a blog about it. We intercut with Julia's life in 50's France as she learns to cook. Interest none. Drama - none. Suspense - none. Witty dialogue - none. Meryl Streep acting - none. After about 30 minutes we could bear it no longer and fast forwarded the rest. Dire in a very dire way, because it was not like a arthouse film which can be dire, but you can vaguely forgive them for trying to be arty. This was middle brow boredom.

Meryl Streep at her best
A great girlie flick that men will love too. Why? I've no idea, but both my partner and my best friend's man love it as much as we do.Julie & Julia sees Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci reunited after working together on The Devil Wears Prada, and they're better together than ever. The story follows the life Julia Childs spent in her 40s with her husband in France and a few other places as he worked for the government. She learns to cook and writes a cookery book with her friends and tries to get it published.Simultaneously the movie follows the story of Julie, a writer who never finished her novel and works at ground zero. She lives in queens and loves to cook and to bring meaning to her life decides to cook her way through Julia Child's cookery book in a year, whilst blogging about it.Both are true stories, both equally fascinating and well intermingled in this hilarious but slightly different "romcom".For anyone interested in cookery, Julia Childs, a good "chick flick" or seeing Meryl Streep act her a** off, this is the movie for you!

Love this movie
I absolutely love this movie. I cut my satellite tv off so I didn’t have access to this movie anymore. For a couple of quid, get the dvd. It’s a lovely movie and will give you some really good food ideas!! Mushrooms and tomato fried off in cream cheese and spread on toast is the business! Not exactly how they do it but inspiration is there!!!
