Don’t buy, these break for no reason!
Preface: we’ve had a few printers over the years and typically get many many years from our HP printers. My family has purchased an Officejet Pro 8600 Plus (brand new from store) and it worked for a few great months and then it started to show Missing or failed printhead error (Rendering all other functions like scan copy & scan to web inaccessible). The machine looks and feels very high end, however it failed and the repair part cost more than a total replacement. Assuming that HP is pretty good and we just got a bad printer we purchased a lower model, the officejet pro 8600 (not a plus model, smaller screen). After setting it up, and working for a short while, it too showed an error: printer failure, there’s a problem with the printer ink or system. In short we’ve purchased new ink and spent time and energy on both these printers only for them to fail shortly after purchase. These are deceptively appealing and look to be built to last however our experience has been very bad. Both printers were input into the HP warranty system and the serial numbers show they aren’t supported anymore. Highly discourage anyone from buying either of these 8600 models. They have a lot of excellent features!! Flatbed, auto document feeder, dual sided scans and copies, email scans, and the list could go on and on... But the hardware of this product is flawed and highly prone to failure. Don’t buy!

Ink is a PAIN! !!!
Getting this thing to accept anything other than 'genuine HP ink' is a pain and HP ink is outrageously expensive. Controls are nice. Printer quality, when it's not whining about the print head or a cartridge, is good. It also seems to use ink quickly compared to the Canon printers that I'm used to. Bottom line, if you can afford to feed it then buy it.

Good printer, but don't buy Assurion warranties!
I bought 2 of these from SamsClub.com in 2012. The 1st one that I bought has worked awesomely since day one..maybe a few times had to reboot it due to loss of communication with my HP desktop PC, but other than that no problems. I bought a 2nd one a few months later, but after a few month, it developed a scanning problem where it would put white streaks (3-4) down the color-scanned image. I purchased both with a 3-yr extended warranty, at-the-time, through Assurion. I set the 2nd printer aside for 2.5 years and only used it occasionally for printing. When I relocated it to try and use it for scanning, it still had the same problem. When I tested it using grayscale, black & white, and color scanning modes, it still had the same problem with the color scanning while not leaving noticeable streaks with the grayscale or black & white scans. So when I filed a claim with Assurion shortly before the warranty ran out a few weeks, they were sending a "refurbished" replacement, which I was to send in my original for them to fix, which would be sent as a replacement to someone else. I got that 1st replacement on Monday, 4 days ago. Other than Assurion's shipping company (Encompass) packing the replacement inadequately with packing material to keep it tight in the box, the replacement wouldn't align the printer, plus it was making a really loud noise (both of mine never made those noises). I had to get Encompass to make an exception to send me another replacement, especially after the guy heard the printer over the phone. UPS picked up that printer 2 days ago. I received the 2nd replacement yesterday and opened it up today. Not only was it not packed sufficiently again, the left side of the printer's frame was pushed out and the lift-up display screen was very hard to put back down. Even though it said it successfully aligned the printhead, it didn't. Then there was an error after that - "scanner failure! Unable to scan, copy, or send a fax"...I was like seriously!! I was gonna give this 2nd printer a chance vs trying to get my original fixed myself, but people said it'd cost more than a new printer. So I called Encompass again & told them the problems and not to send me another replacement, but that I wanted a refund for the purchase price, so I could buy a new/newer model printer in a new HP box that was packaged properly. I had to call Assurion to get the refund approved...This is the 2nd time this has happened with Assurion...I bought a steam cleaner from Walmart in Jan 2012 with 3-yr Assurion warranty. Within 9 mos, it was leaking and it was repaired locally under mfr warranty. Then maybe 18 months later, last summer 2014, it was leaking again. So when I setup the repair thru Assurion, I packed it securely in a wardrobe shipping box. When it came back, they fixed the leak, but because there was literally NO packing material in the box that they sent it back in, the bottom frame was broken. So I had to send it back for them to fix that. When it came back the 2nd time, other areas on the back of the steam cleaner were broken. I called Assurion and told them I was done and wanted a refund. I haven't bought anymore Assurion warranties since last fall 2014, but this warranty with the printer was purchased 2 yrs before the issues with getting the steam cleaner repaired....so my main purpose other then to report that I've barely had any problems with HP printers, DO NOT buy extended warranties through Assurion (old New)...they and Encompass are incapable of packing product properly to prevent shipping damages!!
