Batman by Paul Dini Omnibus

Great Book, very poorly packed…
The contents of the omnibus are great, but the book came damaged. It was packed without any protection and just in a box. A book that heavy should definitely have some bubble guard around it to prevent damage to the hardcover. 3 of the 4 corners were bent.

A Legend's Run On Batman
Paul Dini has an awesome resume. Batman the animated series. Where he co-created Harley Quinn. Superman the animated series. Batman Beyond. Justice League the animated series and Justice League unlimited. He knows how to write. So having him write Batman in comic format should work. Right? Boy did it.This omnibus collects all the issues Dini wrote for Detective Comics and the short lived series Streets of Gotham. We were blessed to having him writing these stories parallel to Morrison's run on Batman in the Batman proper title, Batman and Robin, and Batman Incorporated. In Dini's detective run he mostly tells one off or two part stories. Little mystery adventures that really put Batman's mind to the test. There are a bunch of unusual characters though not so unusual for Gotham. Dini mixes it up with old faces as well as some new. He does such an excellent job at introducing new characters to the Batman mythos. It's fun to get these short stories in the day of five-six issue arcs. At the end of his detective run we get his issues of the Resurrection of Ra's al Ghul crossover. Unlike the Batman by Grant Morrison omnibus there are no story fill in pages in between each issue to fill us in on what happened in the other series' issues. The final issues are the Heart of Hush story. Dini actually makes Hush a compelling villain here unlike the original Hush story in my opinion. It's a modern classic. Then there are the Streets of Gotham issues. He did not do the whole series but the issues flow seamlessly as his story is fully told. In the beginning Batman is Dick Grayson due to the events of Morrison's Batman run and Final Crisis. It is a very dark story line but gripping. The end is a follow up to Heart of Hush, House of Hush. This story is a bit clunkier and confusing at times as it jumps around from character to character and from different time periods frequently. My least favorite of all his stories. Then we have a bunch of little stories he did from various specials. The art is mostly taken care of by Don Kramer and Dustin Nguyen. Kramer does about the first half of this collection with a more photo realistic style. There are a few fill in artists during his run. Then Nguyen does the entire second half of the series. He has a minimalist line approach that is quite unique. All the artwork done in this omnibus is stellar. The omnibus itself is a nice oversized hardcover with a glossy cover under the dust jacket. The pages are glossy and thinner than a normal DC omnibus. Unfortunately the binding is a very tight glue bind. It's sewn too but there is no eye formed at the bases when it's opened and the book shuts right back up. The gutter loss isn't as bad as you'd think with the glue binding. Dini and the artists didn't go for any two page splashes so there is minimal image loss. Text is hard to read at times when it's close to the side of the page in the middle. DC has made other omnibuses better with sewn binding and less glue. I wish they would stick to that. Also there is a table of contents, which is great, but no page numbers! Huh? Plus I think a few issues are missing their covers. Come on DC.A great set of stories by one of the best Batman writers in Bat's history across many mediums. The format may be a bit poor in quality but the stories are solid. A must buy for Batman fans.

Love me some Paul Dini Batman
Paul Dini is a bonafide legend in the world of comics, animation, and video games. I won't go into all his credits here but if you don't know who he is, look him up.The only bummer for this book is that it's not a complete collection of his work. I would have loved to have seen Mad Love, Harley Quinn, all his work on The Batman Adventures series, and the Arkham series. Maybe they'll do a companion book or something someday. There is one other downside to this book in my opinion- the art isn't amazing. I personally am not a fan of any of the artists in this collection besides Alex Ross, Neal Adams, and J.H. Williams III, and they only make up like 30 pages combined. The bulk of the art is done by Don Kramer and Dustin Nguyen. I wouldn't say they're terrible, and Nguyen in particular does have his fans, but unfortunately I'm not one of them.Still a must own book for Batman collectors.

Meh.
Started off well, art was beautiful then the art starts to turn cartoony and the stories get quite silly, bit of a turn off.

Amazing Detective Comics Run with the Best Stories for Hush
Paul Dini, the writer well known for his work on the DCAU and Arkham Asylum and City, did an amazing job with his Detective Comics run. While the stories can be a little silly along with the more cartoonish art style, it was a very fun read and was a bit reminiscent of the storytelling in BTAS.These stories take place during Grant Morrison's Batman run (mainly between Grant Morrison Omnibus Vol 2 and 3). As a result, the remaining half of The Resurrection of Ra's al Ghul story which was not completed in GM Vol 2 makes an appearance and Bruce Wayne goes missing for a short time during the Hush stories. Before reading this omnibus, I recommend reading Batman: Hush as the omnibus contains sequels to that story. If you weren't a fan of Hush, the sequels are far better as Paul Dini does a great job fleshing his character out and gives more sense to his motivation.
