Just Not the Quality We Hoped For
The Sahara color is much lighter than in pic, and looked worn and ragged after 3 days to high school on my teen son. They have zero insoles (see photo) and under that is a cheap piece of thin leather with a hole in it. He has to wear thick white socks so they don't hurt his feet. They faded and sagged immediately and I've polished them many times with leather conditioner to make them decent, it only lasts one day. He has worn them for only 3 weeks and they look awful. He wanted some Sperry topsiders so bad, it was disappointing but they are so popular at his high school. So.... we ordered the same style in Buck/Brown and he hasn't worn them yet but they look much better made leatherwise and appearancewise. I'll review those after they are worn. I am going to yank out the insoles and add Dr. Scholls custom orthotics from the machine at the drugstore.... Pic on left is Sahara worn in and pic on right is buck/brown new. Boys don't ask for much but the few things they want should make them feel good about themselves.

No longer the Top Siders we used to buy.
What has happened to the quality of these shoes. I have worn Sperry Top Sider deck shoes for over 30 years and been very happy with the fit and quality, but this will be my last pair. The quality is extremely poor. The fit was a little tight when new, but that is OK because, being deck shoes you need to soak them and wear them until dry to get the right fit.The problem with these shoes now that they are no longer american made is that if you get them wet ( they are deck shoes and should be made to get wet) they bleed dye all over your feet. The metal grommets through which the side lacings pass are no longer solid rings and they bend outward creating sharp metal thorns that will cut your opposite leg if you should brush your shoe against it (which happens frequently when climbing ladders, etc. aboard a boat).Bottom line; if you are buying shoes to wear where they will never get wet and you don't intend to use them as actual deck shoes they may be OK. If you intend to wear them while sailng or boating stay away from these shoes.I mourn the passing of what I had considered an americam icon.

Lower quality than they used to be, not worth the money anymore.
I have worn this same model of sperry topsiders for a while now, but I'm sad to say this will be my last pair. Sperry quality has gone down significantly between my last pair and these. Immediately after receiving these they had a loud hissing noise from the left shoe with every step I took. I figured this might go away with time, but its still there. Then I took them on a boat of all things, and after a couple of days sailing, not even getting completely wet they started to deteriorate even more. The leather became completely discolored and the insoles are all curled up.After this I emailed Sperry to let them know about the issues with the shoes. I got a fast response saying they would take them in and if they were defective replace them. I responded only to have them ignore me. I tried responding again and got the same email making me think that this is an automated response and not something they intend to follow through on.After owning my previous pair for almost 2 years and having them held up amazingly well I was thoroughly disappointed in what Sperry is willing to sell with their logo on it these days. Stay away from these shoes, they are not worth the money anymore.

Buy elsewhere!
These shoes won't stop squeaking with each step. I've been hoping it would go away after breaking them in, but it's been 3 months and I still have clown shoes. Don't buy these from Amazon.

Top-Siders...Still a Great Shoe
I've worn Top-Siders for years as a casual shoe around the beach, pool, and anywhere in the summer. I was a bit concerned with some of the reviews suggesting the quality had gone down, but decided to replace my almost ten year old top-siders anyway. I was not disappointed at all...the shoes still have the same great quality and comfortable fit right out of the box. While the price has inched up a bit since my last pair I still find them to be an exceptional value. I make a point of applying a thorough coat of clear wax to seal the leather...especially working the wax into the seam between the uppers and sole...it seems to make them last longer. Sizes are spot on...although I never wear socks with these shoes I guess you could, but might need to adjust the size accordingly. Hopefully these will last ten years as well. My highest recommendation.

The Classic
My shoe of choice for casual wear for the last 6 years or so. Although some complain about declines in build and material quality, I haven't noticed much difference among the pairs I've owned. These tend to last quite awhile and clean up easily. I finally replaced my last pair after about two years once the sole started to detach itself on the back end, although at that point they were sorely in need of retiring anyways.I can't recommend these shoes enough - they're comfortable, look great, and well made. My only disclaimer is that the minimal cushioning can result in some sore feet if you spend the entire day walking (i.e. while traveling). And ironically, for "boat shoes", wet traction on anything but a roughened surface is pretty poor.

"Wide" is narrower than it used to be.
They got the length (size) right but are too narrow, despite being ordered as 2E "Wide". I've worn Sperry "boat-moc's" for decades and every time I have to replace them, the point of manufacture seems to move deeper into third-world countries and the size (mostly width) keeps getting smaller and narrower. Also, if you wear these without socks (like they are meant to be worn), expect the insole to come loose after a short period. One good thing is that the leather uppers "breathe" will probably last forever but the soles dry rot prematurely.
