Sato does an amazing job in selecting stories, eye witness accounts, and summaries that help paint a full picture of the samurai. Sato’s translations and explanations are extremely helpful. Highly recommend if you’re interested in samurai or Japanese culture in general.

Students of Japanese culture and history will find this book enjoyable. It is well researched and concise. I particularly enjoyed the eye witness accounts of the famous forty seven ronin incedent, which I had never encountered before. Overall a great read.

very entertaining and informative read

The other book I read about the Samurai written by Jonathan Clements is wonderful . This book is even better. It is a marvelous account of the history of the Samurai. The author of the book Hiroaki Sato is a fantastic writer, not only is he a master in selecting the proper historical facts , but also how masterfully is written. Full of force and passion, you will love it!!!

Gave it to my 12-year-old grandson as he is interested in these people now and is a voracious reader. He seemed very pleased.

This is more for students of Japan's culture than fans of samurai movies. More of a reference book than a straight read. Suggest starting with The Nobility of Failure by Ivan Morris before using this book, Morris puts the samurai tradition into some cultural context that is necessary to get the most out of this book.

Excellent collection of historical tales with all the heroism and sadness one wants from violence and death and honor.

Suited for all people who LOVE JAPAN and are ready to learn anything about it...! contains all records of the japanese history and has a lot of Japanese words.
