The Art of William S. Phillips: The Glory of Flight

The book is well illustrated, generously full of high quality images. I couldn't clearly give it a 5/5 star for that only, but neither only a 4/5. But on the other hand taking under consideration the amazing work of William S.Phillips that counts as content in it's pages, and the price at which it can be found, then I will definitely put a 5/5 star on it. It is a work it will satisfy any aviation art enthusiast, not only for their vivid colors and crispiness, but also for the themes chosen and the captions assigned. It is definitely a book for serious browsing in your free time.

I had this book before but lost it in the recent fires....there are many good pictures/paintings...interesting compositions and great images.

Wonderful story of the history of of air in our time spent in US wars. The prints are first class and the story behind each print is a wonderful read.

Das Buch zeigt die künstlerisch schönen Gemälde von W. S. Phillips (Amerikaner). Sie sprechen den Betrachter durch die Farbkomposition besonders an. Bedingt durch das Format sind viele Bilder über die Falz abgebildet - hier wäre ein Querformat besser gewesen. (Wie bei den Büchern von Trudgian und Taylor.) Manchen mag das stören, aber der Eindruck leidet nicht zu sehr. Viele Bilder werden aber auch auf einer Seite dargestellt. Das Format variiert von 1/4-seitig bis ganzseitig sowie bei doppelseitigen Bildern von 3/4 bis ganzseitig. Es gibt 2 ausklappbare Folder (1x Spitfires mit B17 und 1x Hueys in Vietnam). Die Flugzeuge werden von einzelnen Ausnahmen abgesehen in der Luft dargestellt. Von der Epoche her halten sich moderne Maschinen und solche aus dem 2. WK die Waage. Ergänzt werden sie durch einige aus der Zeit des 1. WK sowie zivile Maschinen. Zu jedem Bild gibt es einen kurzen einordnenden Text. Die Gliederung erfolgt in Kapiteln, deren Titel sich auf die enthaltene Art der Darstellungen bezieht (z. B. „Mixing it up“ für Luftkampfszenen).Für den Fan von Luftfahrtmotiven ideal. Wer wie ich die Epoche 1939-1945 bevorzugt, findet hier 50% relevantes Material. Aber der Rest (modern) fasziniert ebenso. Die Bildgestaltung ist fantastisch und die Wiedergabe der Bilder sehr gut.
