Rubner Classical Guitar Tuning Machines- Ebony Hauser

These are excellent tuning machines - very smooth action with tight, well-machined gearing and high-quality mounting screws. The plates are heavy-gauge brass, and detailing and finishing are top-notch. I will buy these again for my classical builds.

These are so smooth. I have a great guitar, handmade by a luthier in Spain but it is not the top of his line. One place he cheaped out was in the tuning machines. They never were great and they got stiffer and squeakier as time went on. I have another guitar with Rubner tuners as an upgrade that I bought used, and the Rubner tuners were so superior to the ones on my Spanish guitar that I was astonished. They turn easily but don't slip and they let you make fine adjustments to the string. I thought about swapping them on the guitars (the spare guitar is a lesser model though a good one) but I enjoy using them so much I didn't want to downgrade one guitar. So I got a second set of Rubners. The Rubners have a characteristic engraved design of three leaves. There is now a brass knob on the end of the ebony wood knobs. I'd have preferred the arched buttons (very beautiful) but these are fine looking. The set included the "Rubner Roll" which is a low-friction end bearing for smooth tuning. To change tuners, you remove your strings, remove the screws on the side of the old tuning machines and drop the new set into the holes, line them up. Screw down the plates. T These don't cost near as much as some of the astonishingly expensive tuning machines like Gotoh or Gilbert but they really improve the quality of your guitar. I have 3 brands of tuners currently on my classical guitars; Schaller GrandTune, Rubner (this one), and Van Gent. The price difference between Schallers and Rubner is $50, but the quality difference is significant. Pros: - Looks great on the guitar - Smooth tuning, only second to the Schaller I have Cons: - The rollers are 31.5mm long. If your headstock supports only 30/31mm, then you'd have to trim the ends (which I had to do). I used a sandpaper for this. - The inside plate has bumps (the ends of the portion holding the tuning rods). Therefore, once installed, there's a space between the tuner plates and the headstock. Worst case, it can damage the headstock with dings, which happened in my case. Overall, it's a good tuner, but probably this will be my last Rubner.

very nice tuners - although 'upgraded' only means that they have a teflon type surface on the rollers.
