The Mode
Sweden presents some of the best mystery/police procedural television I have seen. It is not just the atmosphere, but the writing, the environment and the acting. Somehow the best Nordic noir mysteries have made their way to television, and this is one of the best. One of the interesting aspects of this series is that we meet the killer right away, up front. We witness the first killing, which connects to the rest of the mystery. Inger Johanne Vik played by Melinda Kinnaman, is a criminal psychologist now working in research. She and her two daughters and ex-husband are at a family wedding where her daughter, Stina, a child on the autism spectrum, witnesses the murder. The lead detective on the case, Ingvar Nyman, played by Henrik Norlen, asks her to join the force to assist him. After deliberation she agrees Thus we begin the real search and the interesting twist this case presents. There is a large cast of characters, and after we learn their issues, several of their storylines are dropped, too abruptly, I think.Vik has a strong family bond, and working with the police only works when her ex-husband can keep the children. This series all takes place around the Christmas holidays, so we are given a taste of Swedish Christmas and long holidays. The relationships of the characters involved are intriguing, and they run the gamut of the very rich and cultured to street people. The killer is an interesting person and the upswing in the music when he appears is a dead give away. This has as I have said a fascinating storyline, and it does not disappoint. Right up until the closing scene there are many surprises.Recommended. prisrob 10-29-17

Swedes and Nazis
As a "nordic noire" this series falls apart by episode 5. Overly complicated, and undermined by cartoonish political posturing and illogical plot points. Perhaps the Swedish writers, in their enthusiasm to smear Americans, and Christians, never bothered to learn that their own country was one of Hitler's chief trading partners and it was Swedish steel that was used to build Nazi tanks, bombs, and the barbed wire of Auschwitz. Sweden whored its way through WWII, and the Cold War, selling to whatever dictatorial regime paid in cold cash. There's no mystery about Sweden's lust for dirty money. How about a nordic noire about that?
