Russian In Exercises: Textbook

I've learned half a dozen languages, and this book is one of the very best textbooks I've used.The tough thing about Russian is all the "inflections" -- conjugations for verbs, declensions for nouns and adjectives, etc. Even a simple sentence ("this tree has large leaves") is not so simple in Russian (need the Genitive case, plural adjectives, demonstratives, etc.). Really internalizing all these rules so that you can use them "in the real world" requires a ton of practice. That's what this book provides: page after page of exercises so that you can practice over and over again until these rules sink in.The book is organized well. It does cover the alphabet, but in a very cursory way, so you may want to learn the alphabet separately before starting this. Then, an "introductory course" takes you through the basics of the language. Finally, the "main course" gives you deep dives on the most important elements of the language -- mostly, cases and verbs. Upon finishing this book, you will be very comfortable with basic and intermediate Russian grammar.Note, this is an _exercise book_ for grammar. The grammar explanations are very terse. Usually, the example sentences and brief explanations are all you need (especially if you have studied other languages), but occasionally it is necessary to seek a more thorough explanation from a textbook or the web. Further, vocabulary is introduced slowly -- you'll learn words as you go, but finishing this book will not by itself give you a huge vocabulary.My only complaint is that the sentences are a bit tedious (e.g., a million variations of "x is a student. He studies Russian"); this is worst at the beginning, since there are few sentences you can form with only the nominative case. Despite this, resist the temptation to skip exercises; you should really do at least 90% of them (and write or type them out).

Love answer key in back of text. Need to know how to read cursive Cyrillic for some of the examples. First page of text provides the alphabet in both printed and cursive Cyrillic.

Great book to write exercises when you’re learning a ne language

I'm not sure which text book is incorrect, however, a text book for Russian shares the same ISBN listed with this book. I accidentally purchased this book in lieu of the actual text book required for my class. Be sure to double check the title of the books when purchasing...The other book with the same ISBN has a multi-colored front cover, and more than just 113 pages as the "Friedrich Vollmer" grey book (as shown) is...I'm not an expert or anything, but I'm fairly certain the book displayed is in German; not Russian..

I own many, many Russian grammar books. This, however, is by far the best organized and most useful of them all. If you finish this book front to back, you will have a great background.The layout is simple & well-organized, so that one can just go through the exercises in order--you don't have to flip back and forth. There is an answer key in the back, so it is useful for self-study. The book is divided into two sections:1) Introductory Lexical & Grammatical Course2) The Main Course (mainly the cases, perfective/imperfective verbs covered here)Though there aren't really grammar explanations, as this is a book of exercises, the tables and sample exercises are quite self-explanatory. I actually find it simpler to learn this way than say, for example, Schaum's or other books where you have confusing explanations and find yourself rereading over & over trying to understand the concept. Here you learn by doing, and I find the concepts are much easier to grasp this way.This Russian exercise book also exists with layouts in many other languages for native speakers of other languages.

A great text for understand Russian grammar

Il libro è sicuramente quello che ho ordinato, peccato che era previsto l'arrivo il primo di agosto ed è arrivato il 21. Ho scritto delle mail al venditore che è stato gentile e premuroso, quindi si merita assolutamente 4 stelle.

Bought it for an evening course I'm attending. Good book, lots of exercises and examples. Since I only have used a part of the book I give it four stars.
