Splatterhouse - Xbox 360

This may be the first time I've felt compelled to defend a game. Normally I only review crappy games so people don't waste their money. I just finished the game however and having heard a lot of very negative reviews I have to give my opinion. The BAD: Some crappy jumping mechanics (although there is very little jumping in the game), horrendous loading times (yes, it loads every time you die), and the last level being an escort mission! I cannot begin to tell you how much I loathe escort missions. How much every gamer I am aware of loathes escort missions! So they do this for the last level of a game?!!! At least there was a second half to that level that wasn't so bad, and I actually managed to finish it. The Good: Beating the living/undead/inter-dimensional crap out of everything in sight with tons of moves, destructible environments, amazing backgrounds, horrifically disgusting and wonderful (somewhat cartoony) graphics, one of the best video game soundtracks ever (mostly heavy metal and some great creepy orchestra pieces), more gore than I've ever seen in a game, terrific voice work with some of my favorite video game quotes, great atmosphere, very fun gory imaginative level designs, and it comes with all of the three original Splatterhouse games! You unlock one game every 3 levels and there are twelve levels by the way. Plus you get more of the story behind the mask and Rick, a great villain- Dr. Henry West, and some gorgeous fun cut scenes! This is not by any means an easy game, but it does allow you to level up your character. And if I can get through it (on easy) then most others can. There are also some interesting collectibles like journal entries and photos of Jennifer. Overall it really captures what the original Splatterhouse games were about although some people might consider it simplistic and repetitive. Most games however are repetitive. It does have some depth, great atmosphere and despite it's flaws it is a really fun game. My kind of game anyway. If you liked the originals and have an open mind I can almost guarantee you'll enjoy this remake. Especially since there are numerous side scrolling missions similar to the first ones. If this sounds like your kind of game then I wouldn't pass it up. Frustrating as it was at times I'm glad it's in my collection.

This game made baby Jesus cry. I remember the Turbografx version and this does not evoke any of those memories. The game play stinks.

I had never heard of the game or the franchise, but the description read "heavy metal soundtrack from Lamb of God and Mastadon" and the used price was only $7. SOLD! I could not be happier with my purchase: Heavy Metal Soundtrack = AWESOME Rediculous Blood and Gore = AWESOME Occasional naked pics of girlfried = AWESOME (but makes me feel nerdy for getting so excited over virtual nips) Lots of Lovecraft inspired story with demons/gods/monsters/zombies = AWESOME Bonus unlockable original games = BONUS AWESOME The game is highly entertaining and funny despite the repetitive monster crushing. The difficulty is just enough on easy to provide an entertaining play through with occasional challenging areas. Really the only bad thing I have found is unreasonably long load times. I say buy, for $7 you will not be disapointed!

Although some of the cut scenes are cartoonish, the hack and slash, mortal kombat style finishing moves and throw back classic side scrolling make this much more fun than critics let on. This is no resident evil or halo 4, but this is tons of fun with extra gross bad guys, some mild nudity for the teenager in all of us and just an overall fun game to pick and play for 5 minutes or five hours. Upgrading is worthwhile and unlocking the old games is just a great hats off to the originals. Instead of buying the originals through Xbox live arcade, you get all three (after unlocking them of course). I would love to play a sequel if they did it. Also at 15 bucks or less, it is cheaper than Xbox live games and more splattertastic! Just get it and gave fun shredding baddies like it is early 1990's!!!

Yes, there are some general problems with the game BUT as far as beat 'em ups go on the XBOX it's definitely one of the best I've played. It's old school and not heavily detailed, if you can appreciate the darker humor and style with some fun beat 'em up gaming it's definitely worth your time. Can't go wrong at $20 or less.
