Drill America - KFDRSD3/8X5/8 5/8" Reduced Shank High Speed Steel Black & Gold KFD Drill Bit with 3/8" Shank, KFD Series

I’ve been in welding/fabricating for 8 years. Specialize in stainless steel and am well aware on the proper technique when it comes to drilling mild steel. I needed 8 precise 17/32” holes so I used an 1/8” bit to pilot the hole. Stepped up to 3/8” and when I went to finish with the 17/32” Drill America bit on the “2nd” our if the 8 holes the bit snapped. The drill didn’t bite or kick at all. It wasn’t a clean break either. It cracked 1” above the shank and then followed the flutes up another 3/4”. If I was abusing the bit I wouldn’t be writing this review and it’s possible I may have gotten a faulty bit. However I was being careful and using drill oil because I knew I only had one bit to drill 8 holes. I will not be purchasing another bit from this company

I bought this to enlarge the holes on my tractor loader. The current holes are 1 3/16" so there is not a lot of material being removed here. Second I am using a high quality dewalt mag drill in order with this drill bit. Drill has little to no run out. Third I am using high quality oil to lubricate. This is not my first rodeo but this was the only drill bit I could get on short notice. Also I should add that all of the holes I was enlarging were factor chamfered so centering the bit was extremely easy.The first hole through mild steel went pretty good I was actually impressed based on the previous reviews. It was about 1.5" thick but again we are only removing just a little bit. I took it slow used plenty of cutting oil. Hole size was proper, appeared clean not a lot of scarring.As I always do I cleaned all metal shavings off the bit between holes.The second hole at 1" thick I could tell it had already lost some of its edge. By the third hole 1" thick the drill bit was catching and scaring the material inside. The fourth hole at 1/2" took twice as long as the third and and was course.I have to say I am not really impressed with this bit. Yeah its cheap but I am removing 1/16" off of the hole and ensuring the bit is perfectly centered. There is no reason why the bit should not be able to handle this. I have four holes left to cut and this bit is basically worthless.

This drill bit is a POS! With in 3 seconds of my using it the shank bent, the bit locked in the steal and the drill nearly took my wrist off. The metal was well lubricated and I am experienced metal worker. My American made bits have NEVER done this.This damn bit must be made from mike steal. I guess if you were drilling leather or butter it would be fine.Don’t buy this POS.

The drill it I received(17/32) was not as pictured. All black,not Gold and black, nor did it have the back grind for better material removal like in photo. I got this bit for doing nutsert installs. It was dull after finishing 2 holes that were 1/2" sized already.

I think this virous has people becoming incoherent. I told them 4 times i needed a half inch drill and they sent me a 2 inch drill with half inch stem for the drill.I guess only the morons are staying on the joband the smart ones are at home. This is not about the money, it is about paying attention to what the custumer needs are. I guess I will find a use for it like drill holes for my seeds i bought. It is the season.HAPPY HOLIDAYS

I never knew there was such a good drill out there ! This drills so cleanly and neatly it must be some kind of drill from heaven ! Food even tastes better since using this drill bit !! I asked my wife if she wanted to drill with me, and she said sure ! Then we drilled together !! We have barely spoken in the last 20 years !! Now all we want to do is drill !

had several gas cans that needed vents installed. Bought the vents, but noticed it took an odd sized drill bit to fit snugly. So, bought this bit. The fit was tight. What I liked is the drill bit seems to hold onto the plastic when the hole is drilled, so you can extract the shavings when you pull the bit out, instead of eyeballing and fishing the plastic pieces out of the can. I used it on 7 cans and each time no shavings had fallen into can! upon installing the vents, here's a tip. Push into as far as possible, evenly. Get an extended socket that's the size of the outer ring, and use a rubber mallet to pop it in without damaging the inner ring of vent.

I went with the USED version thinking it might be dull but that wouldn't be a problem since I know how to sharpen drill bits very well. The drill appears to be new and never used, of medium quality. I haven't used the bit because I have no use for a bit that size at the moment.. I ordered a 51/64" bit and the bit that arrived in my mail box is 49/64". The bit container had three labels on top of each other. Carefully pulling them apart, which was not easy, I discovered that the first label on the box had the correct size on it. The secont label covering the first label is where the mistake was made. The second label wrongly identified the bit as 51/64". The third label was just a long inventory number with no size information on it. I will keep the bit because it is just not worth the trouble to send it back, but I am only giving it one star on the Value for Money catagory because being the wrong size that I don't need right now has zero value. I will take my chances and rate the Durability and Longevity categories four stars each because it looks like an OK drill bit. I might even order another one hoping to get the right size next time. After reading some of the reviews, maybe I should just buy a better brand.
