Good one

I use this to layout drawings within the golden ratio.
I can easily line this up to make sure I am making my composition fit the golden ratio. This model is very nice since the middle lever doesn't come off.

Came broken
Opened the box and it was broken.

Handy for woodworking
Got these for the woodshop. Helpful for laying out stuff on smaller projects or when creating plans from scratch.

Problems
One of the arms of the caliper gets loose every now and then and one cannot glue it, otherwise it won't open.

Divine proportion
My eyebrows have always been a little bit jacked up and sparse in spots. I've longed for eyebrows a' la Brooke Shields ever since I can remember. But that's not why I ordered these. I have always loved the marriage of art and science and this is a tool that I should have in my pencil box a long time ago. These Golden Ratio calipers perfectly calculate balanced proportion according to the Fibonacci sequence of numbers. Many artists used this rule of proportion during the Renaissance period (although it can be observed in much earlier works, and even in contemporary art too), so we're familiar with the perfectly angelic faces and iconic architecture representative of this art era. Most famous would be Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man. There is indeed something serene and divine experienced when you observe this balanced perfection. You can also observe it in the perfectly metered natural spirals of a nautilus shell, or the geometric seed pattern in the center of a sunflower.I've always employed the rule of thirds loosely in my graphic design and fine art. Trained eyeballing has been my most advanced technical system up until now(!). These calipers seem accurate (I did test). The stainless steel is sturdy but also flexible enough for measuring around curves, like that of the face, and they straighten back well. The pins are a little tight and the calipers are somewhat stiff. However, they do stay firmly in position once you put them there. They could afford to be a tiny bit looser though for ease of use. The case could use a latch or snap shut too as it will fall open easily during transportation.Built specifically for makeup, these have a limited range. They'll open as far as 11 inches, and close down as narrow as 0.75" with the small dividing prong removed. You can snap this in place either between the larger width (between points 1 and 2) or the smaller width (between points 2 and 3) to find an accurate midline.Really glad to have this in my kit. I'll likely seek out some larger ones too for bigger projects. However, I will use them discerningly — beauty really is in the eye of the beholder, and who doesn't love an artist who breaks rules?

Great
A cheaters dream. If you're just getting into it, then cheating is a perfectly good thing. The last thing you want to do is mess up someones face. This gets you a perfect result every time.As you do it over and over, you'll get an eye for what's right, and what's not. Eventually you'll be able to ween yourself off of these. Even after years of practice, you may still find someone that tricks your eye. Having these around can be indispensable. It's like having a professional with years of experience sitting beside you, telling you what to do to get the best result. What's really great about these, is that you can use them for any art project. Having the Fibonacci sequence at your fingertips at all times is invaluable for creating visually appealing art. By itself it's a ruler. You can use it as a compass, and you can use it use it for simple spacing between subjects.Overall this is a great tool.Highly recommended.

A nice tool to have and display
I actually wanted this as a display piece in my home not something to use everyday or professionally. In my study/home office I have a wooden desk that has a map, compass, model ship, etc. This tool looks just like what ship captains would use to plot a course, measure distance, and calculate how long it would take to get somewhere. It really fits with the decor and design of the space and I just love it. The box it came it was fancy and flat with a layer of foam padding on the inside. Would make a really fancy gift idea. :)
