Code 8

I would have stood in line to watch this one!
TL;DROriginally, some while ago, I remember watching Code 8's short on YouTube and felt like this would make a great popcorn movie, so when it was available to rent, I opened up the wallet and microwaved some Orville Redenbacher. To cut to the chase, I really enjoyed this! It was like watching the X-MEN meet The FAST and FURIOUS kind of movie, that stays focused and delivers a great story. I could whine about the low budget, or complain about special effects, but that would take away the point that the Amell's and Jeff Chen did a damn good job with what they had and it's a solid piece of work! However, I will say that the beginning of the movie felt like a slow churn, maybe because I was already aware of some of the story line from the film short -- but that aside, the first act still delivered -- exposing a few new characters and settings that had my full attention which moved a few key plot points (-- e.g. the mother, her illness, etc.). And once the second act kicks into gear, I was really locked in, impressed and wishing that this was a streaming series, so that we could see these characters use their skills for future jobs, fast and furious like. Now here is where I kind of spoil things for those who haven't seen the movie yet, but I present this in sort of a wish list ...The Amell's should continue building more stories in this world they've created. More backstory on the mother would be cool. A prequel would show off her surprising freezing talents. Also, was her sickness something that all people with abilities will experience at sometime in their life, or was it something created by a Government sponsored lab attempting to rid the word of those with powers? It's clear that various abilities have limitations or repercussions (like the healers, for example), but it would be nice to see someone, or something that is completely unstoppable. That would shake things up a bit, and even scare citizens from ever trusting 'god like' characters in their midst. Also, it would be nice to know more about the manufacturer of the mechanical cops and drones, and will they update their technology to become even more deadlier? And then there is Agent Park, who had a nice arc in the story, hinting at a possibility to explore his life in future movies or shorts. And I loved the ending with the Healer. Nice touch. In a nutshell, you've created a fan of this potential franchise. I can really see a world of stories sprouting out of this one and I'm truly looking forward to seeing a whole lot more!

Passion Project
I've been watching for this movie since the short film came out in 2016. When Stephen and Robbie Amell managed to raise almost 2.5 million dollars from fans to fund the movie to follow that short film up, and to pursue a vision they were passionate about.Where people with powers were once sought after for their special skills, they are now hated for being different. The jobs that had-to help build the cities that they live in-were given to autonomous robots the second that it became better for the companies bottom line. One law among many others prevents these people from even using their powers in public, and to enforce these laws are the same robots and autonomy that took their jobs and their lives in the first place. It's a constant, everyday reminder that they are less than everyone else because of the gift they were born with.Code 8 follows Connor Reed(Robbie Amell). The show is about Connor finding out how far he would go to provide and care for his mother. Connor does his best to desperately find money to live, and struggles to balance his own moral code every step of the way. Stephen Amell is in a supporting role as Garrett, who shows Connor that he doesn't have to stay as another cobblestone in the street. If you break apart this film, you've got decent acting and writing, good acting, and a storyline that has been done before in different settings. It all adds up to a movie that is a solid 7/10. I liked it quite a bit more than that, but remember I've been following these guys since the beginning. This all started out as a short film on Youtube by a couple family members who wanted to share their vision with the world. The people who gave them their money were not let down. This is who should be making films, and I admire the Amell's passion. If you want to support them, this film is definitely worth the 10 bucks it takes to show them that you appreciate their efforts as well.

THE AMELL COUSINS REALLY SHINE
This is a different kind of sci-fi superpower film - and that's a good thing. The real-life Amell cousins - Robbie (The Tomorrow People, Flash) and Stephen (Arrow) - with their superpowers are being employed in this upside-down world to commit crimes. Connor (Robbie) is taken under the wing of Garrett (Stephen) who works for a drug lord in a place called Lincoln City. Connor doesn't really want to but needs money to pay for his very sick mother's health care. He is also a novice with his power. Garrett slowly but surely coaxes him in the ways Connor can use his power which has to do with the ability to generate powerful electrical bolts. These have the capacity to disarm alarm systems, make electrified fences harmless, and help to gain access to bank vaults. Those with superpowers are constantly being hunted down by a combination of armed autonomous robots and real life human police who are going after them in sophisticated large drones. A command center guides the pursuing law enforcement agents who are armed and armored far more than ordinary police. In reality, they are a true civic military force. How to deal with them and the duplicitous slimy drug lord constitutes the major part of this film. However, a young lady with super healing power and the deteriorating health of Connor's mother are also key to this film. The intersection of the latter two is very emotional. Yet, superpowers can come with a price [NO Spoilers here].The action in Code 8 is non-stop and far from being trite. Seeing the Amell cousins working together is fun. So, too, the reversal of the use of their superpower roles. But... they are always going to come across as good guys; and fortunately the writers don't go against the grain. As another reviewer said, perhaps there will be more like this with the Amell cousins. I hope so.

Interesting window of a near future world.
It's ok overall but is a feasible world where people with extra powers (i.e. different) are rendered unlawful unless registered and then descriminated against anyway. This is more of a cop and heist movie. Enhanced people forced into illegal underground activities simply to survive.Heart felt, empathetic, hardcore, dirty, double dealings foul the lives of all.Interesting window of a near future world. Though not sure what the final scene is about.

Not worth the reduced price.
I thought at the start it looked interesting but around 25% of the way through it stopped being interesting and got boring.
