Excellent
I try to avoid gushing like a fan girl, but I'll make an exception in this case. I first watched this when it became available on Prime. I love it and consider it one of the classics. As a result, I just had to add it to my offline DVD library. It has all James Cameron's signature touches, but the paucity of dialogue might not set well with audiences used to lots and lots of talking. I'm in the show-'em, don't-tell-'em camp, though. You can tell that this was a labor of love for much of the cast.

Solid war film
What I liked a lot about Nolan's film was its grim portrayal of the arbitrariness of death on the battlefield that come come from any direction at any time. It showed how random and scary and awful it must be to be under threat of bullets...Stuka divebombers...torpedoes... artillery. It also nicely showed the grim lot of an army in defeat. Beautifully, yet unsentimentally shot on giant Imax cameras. (A 54 pound handheld camera, yikes!) Enjoyed the extras a lot, too. Did you know that many of the small boats shown actually took part in the real Dunkirk evacuation in 1940? The one great flaw is that Nolan fails to portray the massiveness of the operation. 400,000 men were taken off that beach. But Nolan is famously averse to digital effects, and the lines of soldiers simply look sparse and underwhelming. All he had to do was go to Peter Jackson's Weta for digital soldiers up and down the beach. A misfire, I think.

Amazing but necessarily high anxiety
Amazing movie. Very stressful, suspenseful, eerie. Not much dialog. F word twice. Very well done.

Excellent Special Effects - Lousy Script
Special Effects are best of any war action movie I have ever seen, especially the air engagements. Aircraft are historically accurate, too. Most war movies these days use computer generated air combat scenes that still look fake. This production did not go that route. What a wonderful job in that respect!Unfortunately the script is terribly disjointed. I was constantly wondering where I was. It keeps jumping around to different parties being foiled trying to escape. I've always heard fantastic numbers of men managed to make it back to England, but the impression I am left with from the movie is that very few actually made it! The movie desperately needs a more accurate story line.
