The Princess Bride (20th Anniversary Edition)

Wonderful Rob Reiner movie that is a classic because it is so well acted and cast. Pathetic that the rental price rose a great deal after his murder. That said, this is a pure sweet fairy tale with romance, wit and humor as well.

This is a terrific movie that has so many different editions of the DVD and now Blu-Ray discs that it gets very confusing as to what is in each version. A search of the internet shows several reviews that describe the differences between the DVD versions. Basically the "Dread Pirate Roberts" edition and the "20th Anniversery" edition have different special features not in the other edition. As of this writing, there are three versions of the Blu-ray - the Blu-ray only edition, and the Blu-ray + DVD edition in either a Blu-Ray or the old style DVD case. What makes it confusing is that Amazon and other sellers of this Blu-Ray only edition list this movie as a 1.33:1 aspect ratio, implying that it might be a different movie cut, while the other two Blu-ray editions are listed as 1.85:1 aspect ratio. No doubt this, together with the fact that the Blu-Ray + DVD edition has almost the same price, has hampered sales of this Blu-Ray only edition. Well, I went ahead and got the Blu-Ray only edition, mainly because I thought that there might be a chance that the 1.33:1 ratio was because some older movies were filmed on 35mm film which has a natural 1.33:1 aspect ratio, and then were cropped top and bottom to a 1.85:1 ratio to give them a widescreen look. On the other hand, the very first DVD edition released for Princess Bride notoriously had a horrible pan-and-scan cropped to fullscreen 1.33:1 aspect ratio that showed less of the movie than the widescreen version, which is not what you want to see in a Blu-ray. I was hoping for the other possibility that the listed 1.33:1 for this Blu-ray edition meant that cropping had been removed from the widescreen version to show MORE of the movie as it was originally filmed. However, on playing this Blu-ray, it was immediately obvious that this Blu-Ray only edition is the same 1.85:1 aspect ratio as the other Blu-Ray editions. So all those listed descriptions of this Blu-Ray as a 1.33:1 aspect ratio are just flat out wrong. What are the other goodies on this Blu-Ray? The special features are in their original DVD or lower quality video resolution, although it seems that some of the excerpts from the movie itself have been re-edited to use the higher Blu-Ray resolution. The Blu-Ray quality is excellent, except for being a bit grainy in some parts - tweaking the sharpness or edge enhancement helps, if you have this feature on your Blu-Ray player. Finally, a few words about the movie - it is an absolutely wonderful classic - a warm, romantic, and humorous mythology, one of those perfect family movies that could be shown every year just like "A Christmas Story". It was known to be the late Andre the Giant's happiest experience in life, playing the role of Fezzik; he regularly watched the movie afterwards. It belongs on the list of my favorite films of all time.

This movie is a classic and it is very good. I would recommend it to anybody who enjoys fairy tale type movies.

I first watched this movie as a kid with my sister, and it immediately became one of those films that stuck with me. Rewatching it as an adult, I appreciate it in a completely different way, but the charm is still exactly the same. This is truly a movie the whole family can enjoy. Kids will love the adventure, the humor, and the larger-than-life characters, while adults will pick up on how clever, self-aware, and well-written it really is. What stands out most is how effortlessly it blends genres. It’s a fantasy adventure, a romance, and a comedy all at once, yet nothing feels forced or overdone. The story moves at a smooth, fairytale-like pace, and every character feels memorable in their own way. The dialogue is another highlight. It’s endlessly quotable and delivered with a kind of charm that makes even simple scenes feel iconic. Some moments are funny in a lighthearted way, while others are surprisingly heartfelt, which is part of why it still holds up so well. Even though the film is decades old, it doesn’t feel dated. It relies on strong storytelling rather than special effects, which is exactly why it continues to connect with new audiences today. A true classic that earns its reputation. It’s funny, heartfelt, endlessly rewatchable, and genuinely one of the most iconic fantasy films ever made. The kind of movie that becomes part of your family memories and only gets better with time.

For millions of television viewers who grew up during All in the Family's groundbreaking run (before it became stale in the post-1977 seasons), Rob Reiner will always be remembered as the Meathead, a.k.a. Archie Bunker's ultra-liberal, atheistic, and argumentative son-in-law, Mike Stivic. But Reiner, whose father Carl is one of America's best comedic writer-actor-directors (The Dick Van Dyke Show, Your Show of Shows, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid), is far more than just a good actor with one famous role, for after he left Norman Lear's flagship comedy series after six seasons, Reiner the Younger followed in his father's footsteps to become a well-known and well-regarded actor, writer, producer, and director. One of Reiner's best films is 1987's The Princess Bride, a witty-yet-sweet comedy/fantasy written by two-time Academy Award-winning screenwriter William Goldman, who adapted his own novel about the beautiful maiden Buttercup (Robin Wright), whose true love, a young farmboy named Westley (Cary Elwes), goes off to sea to seek his fortune, telling Buttercup that he would come back for her. But when Buttercup learns that Westley's ship has been attacked by the Dread Pirate Roberts she swears she will never love anyone again, an oath she keeps even when she accepts a marriage proposal from Florin's Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon), a handsome yet somewhat shady fellow who probably could give Machiavelli some lessons in, well, Machiavellian diplomacy. His plan is simple: take over as King of Florin as soon as his father passes away, get bethroded to a beautiful engaging commoner, then stage her kidnapping and demise to incriminate the neighboring rival kingdom Guilder and start a war. Aided by the equally heinous Count Rugen (Christopher Guest), Humperdinck hires a trio led by the too-clever-for-his-own-good schemer Vizzini (Wallace Shawn), the revenge-obsessed Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin), and Fezzik (Andre the Giant), a brawny hulk with a heart of gold and a fondness for rhymes. The three manage to kidnap Princess Buttercup, but before they reach the Guilder-Florin border they run into an unforeseen obstacle: a dashing swordsman dressed in black. Goldman's clever way of grabbing the audience's heart and funny bone is to present this fairy tale with a framing story of a 1980s grandfather (Peter Falk) who visits his sick grandson (a pre-Wonder Years Fred Savage) and reads the tale of The Princess Bride to him, following a long family tradition. Reiner gets wonderful performances not only from the major cast members, but also from Billy Crystal and Carol Kane, who play Miracle Max and his wife Valerie in a short but hilarious scene. He approaches the fractured fairy tale as a comedy/romance/swashbuckling adventure, poking gentle fun at the conventions of all the fantasy/medieval adventure films of the 1930s and '40s without being obnoxious or too sardonic. The result: a film that overcame box-office failure (it had a brief and unprofitable theatrical run in the summer of 1987) by becoming a home video success. (This is not unique to The Princess Bride, either. 1939's The Wizard of Oz was no box office champ when it premiered; only when it became an annual TV staple in the mid-1950s did Oz become a family classic.) The 2001 MGM Special Edition DVD presents The Princess Bride in its original widescreen format, and features a director's commentary track by Reiner, a writer's commentary by Goldman, English and Spanish audio tracks, a new documentary on the making of the film ("As You Wish"), plus theatrical trailers and two original featurettes. As Vizzini might have added, to try and find a funnier family film is absolutely inconceivable.

La commande est arrivée très rapidement et dans un emballage soigné. Le Blu-Ray est tel que décrit par le vendeur : neuf sous blister ; par conséquent le disque est sans une tache ni griffure. Compliments au vendeur !

Un film evergreen da guardare con tutta la famiglia, un bel cast, tante risate e affetto, non solo dei protagonisti ma anche da parte di nonno e nipote, raccomandato per chi vuole godersi un film con figli e nipoti.

This is one of my all time favorite movies. Most of my friends can quote nearly every line of this movie, which can get annoyingly funny when you have 6 or 7 people in the same room doing all the lines of the characters. hehe I picked up this Blu-Ray of it because its the 25th anniversary edition with a whole bunch of extras that my DVD version doesn't have. Considering when this movie was made the video quality is pretty good for blu-ray. Who should buy this movie? EVERYONE!!! Its a timeless story of boy meets girl, boy leaves girl to find adventure and money, and boy gets killed off by the Dread Pirate Roberts and girl gets engaged to the evil Prince and.... well you get the idea. Its filled with adventure, sword fights, giants, villains, heroes, princesses, miracles, rodents of unusual size and humor. This movie has something for everyone. Boys, girls, men, women and even rodents of unusual size will love this movie. Its actually inconceivable how anyone could not like this movie.
