A First-rate Analysis
Bisio's presentation of Ba Gua Zhang concepts and real-world applications of both training and application is first-rate. It should be said that this title is not intended to teach this style, but rather to explain principles and usage critical to a student's study. The book provides clarity on many aspects of the art that are frequently referred to in other works, but which are rarely presented with such clarity (including as the importance of fundamentals, the value of circle walking, correct footwork and entries in application, and the common traits shared by advanced practitioners including those of different fighting traditions like the legendary escrimador Momoy Canete, who Bisio studied under). I have read many books on Ba Gua Zhang and other internal arts over the last few decades, but have found few titles that have discussed the essential content of this book so clearly. Highly recommended.

An thorough understanding that gives meaning to the practice.
Theory and practice go hand in hand in mastering any subject. This book gives the foundational understanding of Ba Gua so a student gets the "why" behind a movement or exercise and thereby remains motivated to carry on. This should be the job of the teacher, but teachers differ in method. This book levels the playing field to some degree. For those interested in the theory only, it is a good grounding in Chinese philosophy and Daoism.
