MTECH USA MT-673 Fixed Stainless Steel Blade,5",Black

I am blown away by how well this knife is made. For a knife costing 7.00 its fantastic. The blade is thick and strong, has a nice grind to it and was decently sharp out of the box. A few swipes on the ceramic side of a Smiths knife sharpener and its plenty sharp enough for any day to day cutting tasks. Ive seen some reviews on this of people thinking this is a "go to war" knife. Its not, not big enough, nor made to do those kinds of tasks. Its not a woodland survival knife that will cut down trees and built a log cabin. What it is, is a knife that you will keep on you, all the time, its light, very light, but feels good and balanced in the hand. Its easy to cut with and easy to apply pressure if cutting something more difficult like rope, cardboard, etc. The sheath is well made from actual kydex, some say theirs rattled but mine does not. Lockup is tight, its not going anywhere and isnt gonna fall out. Requires a direct pull to release the knife from the sheath. I had never heard of Mtech before this and its my first knife from them, will not be the last. I cant attest to how long it will hold an edge, though I have a suspicion that directly depends on how you use it. Even if it doesn't hold it the best, a few swipes on a sharpener and its right back. The blade design is fantastic and allows for long stroke cutting or precision cutting using the slanted tanto end. This same end is also really good for piercing things, packages, dog/cat food bags, tape on boxes, mailer envelopes and so on. Would also work good for food prep while camping. The sheath comes with a dog tag style beaded chain to hang around your neck. Chain seems well made and is coated black, which makes it less visible when around people. Also the flat profile of the knife and sheath make it very discrete when worn around the neck. If you would rather carry it on your belt like me, be it horizontal or vertical, all it takes a little length of paracord and a lighter and you can easily make belt loops. Don't listen to what others say about 550 paracord not fitting, it does, just requires a little ingenuity to get it started. First cut a length of paracord longer then what you need, say maybe 10 inches. Next take a piece of clear tape, like scotch tape and tape one end of the paracord as i did in one of the pictures. Now you can run the tape thru the eyelet holes and pull the cord thru, its the exact perfect size to fit now. Once you get the cord thru all the holes the way you like them, adjust the size of the loops to fit your belt and leave just a little extra over. Cut the para cord on the back side close to the eyelets, leave just a 1/8 inch or so sticking out, take a lighter or some other means of melting the paracord ends and once you heat it a bit, use the flat blade of a pair of scissors to press the paracord and make it bigger then the hole. Now the loops can come out and you dont have to tie a knot on it. You can see this in one of the pics i posted. I did mine for horizontal carry, but vertical would work the same way. In closing I think this is a good value for what it is, obviously its a copy of the CRKT minimalist but 1/3 the price. I like CRKT knives, I took a pic of the Mtech next to the CRKT S.P.E.W. (i hate that name) for a size comparison. I bought the spew locally at Walmart the day I ordered the Mtech, its what got me looking on here. 20.00 for that knife seemed a little bit much for something that small and after researching and getting the Mtech knife, I will be returning the spew for a refund. From what I can tell both the minimalist and the spew use 5cr13mov steel, the Mtech uses 440c stainless. From my research these steels are pretty close in performance and are both are rust resistant. I don't think you would achieve much different results using either. Back in the 80's and 90's pretty much every knife we had in America was made using 440c, even kitchen knives. I still have butcher knives made from it, they are better then 30 years old and still work just fine. If you are looking for a nice small, lightweight, everyday carry knife, want to free up your pockets but not carry something around that looks like you are heading to a Rambo impersonator event pick this little knife up, you wont regret it, and at 7 bucks a pop neither will your wallet.

I paid a 13 dollar bill for this little neck knife. It's good. I looked up the steel on Mtechs website and it says 3cr which is OK, the crkt minimalist is 5cr. Anyways this knife isn't meant to be used as a primary. It has a really good feel in hand. The grind was a little wanky out of the box, but was sharp enough to cut paper. Stealth retention is excellent. Mine is secure I have shaked this vigorously with knife in and it isn't going anywhere. See video for my test results. If youre looking for something primarily you may want to look elsewhere because the edge wont last you long because of the steel. Overall I think it's worth it for $13 considering crkt minimalist is $30.

An American design, but handcrafted in China {see pic 4}, this knife is designed to be worn around the neck {see pic 1}. Witness the plastic sheath (that holds the knife snugly ... I love the way it solidly SNAPS in and out of the included kydex sheath {see pic 2}) that holds it handle side down when worn around the neck with the supplied chain. It was not what I would call very sharp when I got it. But it DID sharpen up quite well with the knife sharpening kit that I have. See this knife sharpener: Knife Sharpener Kit , The knife has a 3mm (almost 1/4") thick stainless steel blade that would work well for a much larger knife, so for this small knife, it is quite thick. This thickness should make this knife very durable. It is 4 15/16" long {see pic 3}. It has a checkered plastic handle, which along with the finger cutouts, gives it a good grip. At less than $10, this full tang, 1/4" x 5" (thick x long) stainless steel blade with an included sheath and neck chain, that sharpens up well (arm hair shaving sharp) should provide a good value for an auxillary EDC knife. You won't be fighting off hoards of zombies with this knife or chopping down trees, but that is not what this knife was designed to do. I only give it 4 out of 5 stars as it is my belief that there HAS to be something better out there somewhere, but I DO recommend this knife. Despite its being made in China, it seems reasonably well made and should last a reasonably long time.

I had never even bothered to look at this brand, assuming it was total crap, like stuff you see at the swap meet or off the late night cable knife shows. I saw some positive comments on a few blade forums and was still suspicious. I came across this particular knife on Amazon, read the reviews which are mostly positive and decided to take a chance. Knife arrived today. When I picked up this little knife I was surprised. It feels very solid. I believe the handles are real G10, the blade is surprisingly thick for a short knife. The blade is a small 2" hollow grind tonto. I honestly do not know what the steel is. I've read its 440, which is fine utility knife steel if it is done well. It came dull but with a decent grind. I touched up the blade with a dozen or so strokes on a stone. it won't shave me, but it slices paper well enough. I see this as a utility/self defense knife. I paid 10$, got a nice little hunk of decent steel and a decent Kydex sheath. What's to complain about, it gets sharp, is a decent thickness, has nice G10 handle, Kydex (very basic) sheath, a hollow grind. I'm happy and might look at some other styles from M-Tech. For the price why not throw one in each of the various bags most of us have stashed here and there?

This (very) small, neck knife is exactly what I expected for $10. Yes, it's not the best blade/material, but does it do it's job? Yes! Is it small and compact? Yes! If I were to break it or lose it, would I be bummed? Probably not! For under $10, this is a very fine small, neck/belt fixed blade knife. Yes, there are many more brands out there that are made of better materials, that are sharper, have a better warranty, etc., but for under $10, this is awesome. I used to carry a small, folding EDC knife that was around $20 (from a very reputable brand), but found that this $10 fixed blade knife has many more "pros" than the folding knife. I see that some people used 550 paracord to create a loop for their belt, but I found that using 1/8" bungee cord (elastic) was much better at holding the sheath secure against by belt vs paracord. I also hang this around my neck as well using some nylon cord (not tarred bankline as it's very abrasive) and some pop barrel connectors so that I can easily pop it off. Perfect for EDC and as a back up knife, but don't expect too much in terms of keeping it's edge. I would 100% recommend as a back up or a back up of a back up.

If you know anything about knives, then you know that there are "good" brands and "bad" brands. Generally speaking, MTech falls into the latter category. When I bought this knife I was expecting nothing more than a display piece, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was actually pretty good quality! The knife itself is perfectly sized for a neck knife, it's light enough to wear around the neck without any noticeable irritation, fits quite well into the hand, and has an excellent blade profile for piercing and cutting; the knife grip is secure enough that, in a pinch, it could be used for fighting. (Obviously this knife is not /designed/ for fighting, but if I had to choose between this and my fingernails, I would choose the knife every time.) For a utility knife, this blade is admirable, and is good enough quality to be thrown into the "usable" pile, rather than being a decorative display piece. So why just three stars? Two reasons: First, this knife ships dull. It's certainly sharp enough for opening letters, cutting tape, and trashing cardboard boxes; but if you want something to cut paracord, slice paper, or shave with, you'll need to put in some time on the sharpening stone. Second: The blade doesn't hold its edge terribly well. This is just a fact of 440 stainless steel. If you use this knife frequently, you'll have to sharpen this knife frequently. Personally I enjoy sharpening my knives, so it's not a deal breaker for me, your situation may not be the same. If you need a beater, knock around knife, this is a good pick for you. If you're willing to put in the time to sharpen it and care for it, it's even better. For the price, the MT-673 is easy to recommend, it's a good addition to anyone's EDC collection.

The pictures and descriptions do this knife no justice, when I opened my package it immediately screamed quality, not disappointed at all. Definitely exceeded my expectations. Reminds me of something made by Ka-Bar or Ontario Knife Company. The sheath is sturdy kydex, quality rivets, the knife it's self fit my hand like a glove, smaller than expected but nonetheless an awesome piece. Conceals well under button up shirt.

its sharp, it's small and concealable, would definitely serve as a self defense weapon or just simply as a cutting utensil for a camping trip. It's really sharp but could use a bit of finessing if razor sharp is preferred. Can be used with neck chain or strapped to the boots using the shoe laces , with black boots it's almost undetectable as it blends in really well. Others report that it is possible to modify the sheath and are able to carry this blade on the belt. Happy with this little blade as it has held up really well and the sheath is great and secures the blade properly and securely. Remember to leave it behind in case you need to enter a government building or Airport where weapons are not allowed because it really is so small and lightweight that it's easy to forget it's on you.
