Wippermann 8XX 8-Speed Chain

False advertising!
False advertising! The description states "up to 40% increase lifespan as a result of stainless steel inner links, combined with high-grade nickel coated outer plates". This is the description (from the Connex website) of the top of the line 8sX chain. What I received was the much cheaper (less than half the price) 808 nickel-plated non-stainless model. There is no "8XX" model so this appears to me as intentionally misleading advertising to pawn off the cheaper 808 chain as the more expensive 8sX. Probably still a reasonable chain for the price paid, but the discount is not real, nor does the product match the description. Caveat emptor.

DAILY BICYCLE RIDER RIDING TEN MILES A DAY OUTSIDE ALL KINDS OF WEATHER
HI buyers, I BOUGHT THIS CHAIN BELIEVEING IT WOULD NOT RUST TIRED OF BUYING THE CHEAP 9.00 BIKE CHAINS THAT RUST UPIN 2 MONTHS. THIS CHAIN SO FAR HAS NOT RUSTED WITH 2 MONTHS OF EXPOSURE TO THE WEATHER . FOR THAT REASON ALONE THE CHAIN COULD SAVE YOU TIME. THE CONNECTING LINK DID NOT WORK RIGHT AND I HAD TO BUY ANOTHER CONNECTING LINK . THE CONNECTING LINKS IS TAPED TO THE INISE OF THE BOX AND THIS PRODUCT APPEARS TO BE MADE IN GERMANY.

Its a good chain
I biked a few hundred miles with no problems. Its very easy to remove the links but since its so slippery it takes a few tries.

Great Chain... Horrible Instructions!!!
First, a little bicycle chain trivia: Did you know that a chain comprised of an inner link on one end and an outer link on the other will always have an even number of links? Yes, it will, as any number of inner/outer link pairs will always result in an even number of links regardless of the length of the chain. Most bicycle chains fitted from the manufacturer are connected or joined together with connecting rivet. When replacing this type of chain, the replacement is cut to size making sure one end terminates in an inner link and an outer link on the other end. A rivet is then used to connect the ends together.Surprisingly, and to my chagrin, the directions provided with Wippermann Connex chains, which are connected using a special master link, instruct the user to follow the same approach. According to the manufacturer's instructions, the following must be observed to determine the correct chain length:1. Make sure an inner link comprises one end of the chain and an outer link the other.2. Keep in mind that the Connex link will account for one link.Item '1' DOES NOT APPLY to Wippermann Connex chains! Both ends MUST terminate with an inner link for the special Connex master link to work. Here's the proof that the instructions are technically in error:Suppose the original chain has 108 links. According to the instructions, the new chain cannot be cut to 107 links since the user must make sure an inner link comprises one end of the chain and an outer link the other. By definition, an odd number of links means that both ends of the chain would terminate with either an inner link or an outer link.As stated before, any chain comprised of an inner link on one end and an outer link on the other will always have an even number of links. To minimize chain slap, a user will then likely opt to shorten the chain to 106 links, for a total of 107 links with the Connex link. Although one link short of the original, one can assume that being one link short, which translates to ½ inch difference, is marginally acceptable. At this point one would think that cutting the chain to 106 links would be okay. However, contrary to the instructions provided by the manufacturer, the Connex link requires both ends of the chain to terminate with an inner link. As this will require one additional link to be removed, the chain will now be down two links from the original which translates to a full inch shorter than required. This is not acceptable as a large chainring/rear sprocket gearing combination may place undue stress on the rear derailleur. Therefore, the CORRECT INSTRUCTIONS to determine the length of a Connex chain when matching the length of an original chain should read as follows:1. When determining the chain length, make sure both ends terminate in an inner link.2. Keep in mind that the Connex link will account for one outer link.Following these instructions will allow one to precisely match the length of any original OEM chain. Using the same example of a chain 108 links in length, all one needs to do is to cut the chain down to 107 links making sure that both ends of the chain terminate with an inner link. Then the Connex link, which serves as the master outer link, is added to connect the chain totaling the original 108 links precisely.Dealing with the Wippermann jr. GmbH representative in Germany, who graciously provided a replacement free of charge through their USA agent, was outstanding. My customer service experience was top-notch and she was a pleasure to work with. However, since my customer feedback will apparently not be used as an opportunity to clarify the instructions to eliminate any ambiguity, I have opted to post this information to hopefully prevent any possible confusion for any customer new to master connecting links.

Expensive and wearing out very quickly.
Nice enough chain and seems to be very quiet. It arrives lathered in an oil (compared to KMC chains wax) and in a plastic free cardboard pouch. I have not had to oil it yet because the factory oil is still covering the chain after nearly 300 miles riding. The quick link is the best I have used so far out of other chains I have had from; Shimano, KMC and SRAM. Even when I had a little crash, which threw my chain off the chainrings, it did not uncouple itself. Yet when I want to remove and refit the chain it is a doddle to do by hand. KMC and SRAM quick links are stiff and still really need tools to assist in breaking the chain. I would point out that this chain is a lot more expensive than the others. Looking at it side by side with the other brands that I have purchased I’m not really sure it was worth the extra. The Wippermann has roughly finished edges compared to SRAM and KMC which appear better quality to the eye. By far the quietest I have owned was a KMC X series chain. Finally I would like to point out that this Wippermann chain is wearing very quickly compared to the other brands that I have owned (already half worn on my gauge). I think my next one will be a KMC again but using the Wippermann quick link (I have read that they will work on other brands).

A reliable chain that is easy to install and maintain
I have used Wipperman 8, 9 and 10 speed chains on 4 different bikes, and have never had a problem with any of them in over 8 - 10 years - no chain breakages etc. I change the chains after maybe 12 months use and before they stretch beyond the chain wear tool limit, and the cassettes and chainwheels are not getting worn even after several chain changes. The chains look good, with the nickel plating. The Connex link is the only one I have found that is easy to open and that can really be re-used. Shimano and SRAM chains are much more fiddly to install, and I find the SRAM links really hard to unfasten when you are by the side of the road. The only thing to watch is that the Connex link is not symmetrical and needs to be installed so the "bulge" faces outwards. If you install it the wrong way round, the chain can jump or make a noise when it passes over the cassette, so this can seem like a faulty new chain or a worn cassette. Provided you avoid this mistake, you should enjoy a problem-free and easy to maintain and remove chain. Having tried Shimano, SRAM and Campag chains on different bikes in the past, I find the Connex easier to install and more reliable than other makes.

Great chain ...
Can't go wrong with Wipperman chains, I always use these in preference to other brands. Particularly good on my mountain bike, even when it gets very muddy, it doesn't skip over the gears anywhere near as badly as other makes.

LOVE THIS CHAIN
this is my second wipperman connex 808. I bought it to replace my last one, which was still functioning great but needed replacing when I replaced my entire drive train. Shiny, smooth and easy to clean, you really can't go wrong here.

Langlebigkeit?

Super!
