Chess Evolution 2: Beyond The Basics (Yusupov's Chess School)

My favorite chess series
I love this series of books. Chances are, if you're looking at this title, you probably do too, regardless of this review. But for those who are not yet converts, give this a chance. Yusupov has written essentially a collection of workbooks for learning chess. The topics are varied, and jump around from openings, to tactics, to endgame studies. I like this approach, because it means that you don't have a chance to get bored with one topic, and if you aren't all that interested, you know that the topic will change with the next lesson. Regardless of the variation, the topics covered are a relatively thorough overview of chess for the self motivated learner. There's a lot less writing in these books than almost any other book I've seen that's focused on the beginning or mid-level player, but for that reason it forces you to think through things on your own, rather than reading an interpretation.I'm not a master, just a club player who started late in life, and I found that working through the first few volumes (,, and improved my rating from about 1200 to about 1600. Maybe one day I'll be a Class A or master level player, but for now, I'm enjoying the study, and I'm enjoying winning more. That's all I ask of a chess book. Now that I'm studying this one, I'm still improving.Recommended if you are self-motivated and want a systematic plan of study for improvement. Volume 1 was understandable but challenging to me with a rating of 1200, and this one is quite challenging at times with a rating of 1600.

A great book in a great series
Artur Yusupov is a former Soviet era grandmaster who was once in the top 5 of the chess world. He is now living in Germany and is an active chess trainer. He wrote a series of books which form a very complete tutorial on chess: Build Up Your Chess, Boost Your Chess and Chess Evolution. Each book has three volumes for a total of 9 books. To quickly determine which book you are looking at, look at the image - they are a square, triangle and a circle. The book is organized in the form of distinct self-contained chapters which can be thought of as a lesson. Each chapter has a didactic portion followed by a post-test. There are also final assessment exams.I'm not a master nor even a highly ranked player so I can't demonstrate that these books will make you stronger over the board. I suspect they will but like any form of training, the serious students will benefit the most. For patzers like me I just enjoy working through the lessons. It is probably as close as I'll ever come to taking a formal lesson from a GM.
