Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (The Criterion Collection) [DVD]

Mishima was a horrific narcisissist who has mostly been forgotten in his native Japan. His life is fascinating for westen audiences because it fits into a lot of sterotypes people have about Japan. That being said this is a beautiful film with many textures. You will certainly be rewarded if you watch but you might be dissapointed if you then read Mishimas novels. But he died in a fascinating way on his own (twisted) terms!

This is an excellent movie made by one of Scorsese's assistants on Taxi Driver. Combining factual detail with highly stylized excerpts from Mishima's writing, the movie seeks to explain the enigma of this well-known Japanese author. Mishima was a prolific writer, an actor, ran his own private military academy, and in his early forties attempted to bring back the emperor and Bushido to Japanese society. Anyone familiar with the Mishima story knows things ended badly, with Mishima committing traditional Japanese sepuku. The music by Philip Glass adds great dramatic enhancement!

Intitially saw this film in the mid 80's for the Phillip Glass score and was glad I did. Beautifully staged and filmed, it recieved little fanfare after its first release and I rarely come across people who have seen it yet. If you've not experienced this highly under rated biopic masterwork, it is definately worth seeing...several times. Whether or not Yukio Mishima was a true genius struggling to reconcile the grand integrity of Japan's ancient Samurai history with post WWII westernization, a charismatic narcissist or both, is the viewer's decision to make in the end. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the film seems to insist on its own self-importance at times. I'm not exactly sure why I feel that way about it, but i do. I can say that I found the short one act plays, interlaced with dramatization of his real life, thoroughly entertaining, evocative and exhilarating to watch. This isn't light fare stuff that will leave you happy at the end. It leaves an impression that evolves over time with memory. What seems simple becomes complex and vice versa which is part of what makes having this film in your collection worthwhile.

It's impossible to stop this film and return to it later. You must see it all the way through in a single sitting.The first 95% is best. The last part is the weakest, unfortunately. The director tries to recreate the newsreel scene of Mishima on the balcony, followed by his seppuku, but it doesn't work as well as the rest of the film.Nevertheless, because everything leading up to that final scene is so rivetting, it's possible to overlook the less stellar final scene.Through the inter-weaving of his writing (novels, plays, etc) as if they are movies or on a stage, with scenes meant to show Mishima's own life, we get the sense of kabuki theatre mingled with his own life. It's as though he wanted to stage each scene of his life simultaneously as writer, director and actor.An understanding of Japanese life in the 1920 - 1969 period would help as without that knowledge it might be difficult to understand the actions of his fictional characters, and by extension the major influences on his own life. His earlier experiences are shown to lead to his delusions as an adult, culminating in his misguided belief that the self-defence forces of post-War Japan would readily embrace his demands to follow him in overthrowing modern society.

In my opinion this is one of the greatest films ever made, So beautifully shot and composed. An incredible true story that brings goosebumps even after repeated viewings, The extras include a documentary about Mishima that is excellent. Even after seeing this movie and all the extras, reading Mishima’s books and researching him online, I am still puzzled by the man and his myth. Watch this film!!! It will blow you away!

I recently bought and watched the Criterion Collection edition of Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters directed by Paul Schrader. You may remember Schrader as the screenplay writer of Taxi Driver and director of American Gigolo and Cat People. This package has a new, restored high-definition digital transfer of the director's cut with new audio commentary from Schrader and producer Alan Poul. The second disk has video interviews with cinematographer John Bailey, producers Tom Luddy and Mataichiro Yamamoto, composer Phillip Glass, and production designer Eiko Ishioka. In addition, new video interviews with Mishima biographer John Nathan and friend Donald Richie. Other features include: an audio interview with Chieko Schrader, a video interview featuring Mishima talking about writing, and The Strange Case of Yukio Mishima, a 55 minute BBC documentary. There's a booklet that has a new essay by critic Kevin Jackson, a piece on the film's censorship in Japan and photographs of Ishioka's sets-which are pretty spectacular. It is a fascinating story of how the production got made and the struggles they had to make the film in Japanese with an almost all Japanese crew and American director. And the film is a triumph and the score by Glass has become a sort of classic and some of it was used in The Truman Show as well. The film is a complex intermingling of Mishima's biography, his last day where he committed seppuku, and adaptations of his fiction: The Golden Pavilion, Runaway Horses, and Kyoko's House (which has yet to be translated into English). Add to this: sublime production values, impressive cinematography, evocative acting, and a memorable musical score and you have an art house classic.

It's criminal that there's no Region 2/B DVD or Bluray of 'Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters' currently available in the UK. This Region1 DVD shows you what you're missing out on however. Gorgeous design and packaging, this 2-Disc set includes all three soundtracks for the film (Roy Scheider's original 1985 English voiceover/narration, Ken Ogata's Japanese voiceover/narration (subtitled) and a regrettably poor third voiceover put out by mistake in 2001, the less said about which the better so avoid). I haven't yet listened to the director's commentary so can't comment on that. The extras on Disc 2 however are all excellent and informative, as is the booklet that comes with these DVDs.As to the film itself, 'Mishima' is, without question in my opinion, a very great film that deserves a much wider audience than it probably gets due to both its limited availability and the fact that it's ostensibly a Japanese language film (although Scheider's narration is sublime and together with Philip Glass's score really makes the film work superbly). Paul Schrader's blending of different styles of cinema with theatre as well as fact and fiction creates a dazzlingly composite movie that is both powerfully intense and moving. Ken Ogata's performance as Mishima is excellent and even if he doesn't physically resemble Mishima himself Ogata fully embodies the role of the writer and makes you believe in the man you see on the screen. Very, very highly recommended.

最初にブルーレイ・ソフト 『Criterion Collection: Mishima: Life in Four / [Blu-ray]』 について書いておくと・・・画質については、発色もよく細部もよくみえており画面のガタツキ・ゴミもほぼなく、1985年の作品として良好だと思う。基本的に海外向けのソフトなので日本語字幕はついていない。しかし、ナレーションも含め日本人俳優が日本語で演じており、冒頭の説明字幕 （三島由紀夫の略歴等） 以外は視聴に支障はない。音質も画像同様に良好。英語字幕は消す事ができる （ロイ・シャイダーのナレーションバージョンも選択可能）。 我が家に複数あるブルーレイプレイヤーでの再生も問題なし。仕様面は豪華。映像特典はかなりの量がある。関係者の証言を中心としたものだが、一部にメイキング的な映像も含まれる。映像特典にも字幕はないが一部に日本語でのコメントがある。特に美術を担当した石岡瑛子氏のコメントは量があり興味深い。他の日本語でのコメントは丸山明宏 （美輪明宏） 氏、大島渚氏などが含まれる。丸山氏のコメントは本編のワンシーンに関連したもので興味深い。他にポール・シュレイダー監督によるコメンタリーもあるが当然日本語字幕はない。封入物はかなり豪華なブックレット （Ｐ58） 。英文だがオールカラーで多くのスチルが楽しめる。特に石岡氏が担当した美術はすばらしい。ケースは通常クライテリオンが採用しているプラケースではなくデジバックに外箱が付く豪華な造り。ジャケットデザインも凝っており外箱は以前から発売されているＤＶＤ版と同じだが、デジパックとブックレットにはそれぞれバリエーションを変えたデザインとなっている。本作は日本で未公開扱いなので正規の国内版ソフトは存在しないが、2010年に書籍 『三島由紀夫と一九七〇年（鹿砦社 ）』 の映像特典として封入されたことがある （以下ＤＶＤと記す） 。それとの比較を書くと・・・差はかなり大きい・・・という結論になる。ＤＶＤは英語字幕を消すことができないし額縁画面になっている。暗いところは潰れ気味で画面のゴミが残りガタツキも残る。笠置衆出演場面のカットされた公開版である。・・・など明らかにブルーレイ版のほうに軍配が上がる （とはいえ、本作をＤＶＤのフォーマットで手軽に観ることができる貴重な版であることも確かだが）。他に書くべきことがあるとすれば、輸入品であり価格の変動が大きいことだろうか。私の購入時の価格は ￥3000 台後半であった。個人的には十分安く感じる価格である。・・・といったところで商品としての全体的評価は★5つとしたい。今後本作が正規に公開（発売） される可能性は少なく貴重であるし、海外仕様でも十分満足度が高いからである。以前ＤＶＤを購入された方も買い替える価値がある商品ではないだろうか。・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・商品としてのブルーレイの評価は以上です。以下の文章は 内容 についての雑文 （感想等）となりますので不要と思われる方は飛ばしてください。（特に未見の方は注意してください）・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・遥か昔 （1980年代末） に本作の ＶＨＳビデオ をレンタル店で見つけたことがある。輸入品で全て英語表記なのにジャケットは日本人俳優 （緒形拳）・・・裏ジャケットを見ると 切腹 みたいなスチル・・・その正体不明なビデオはレンタル店で浮いていた。作家・三島由紀夫を描いた日本未公開映画の貴重なビデオだったことを知ったのは20年近く後になってからである。三島由紀夫を描いた映画といえば若松孝二監督 『11.25・自決の日　三島由紀夫と若者たち（2012）』 が記憶に新しい。所謂 『三島事件』 に突き進んでいく心情・状況を ‘楯の会’ の面々と描いた本作は左右の違いこそあれ同時代を走りぬけた若松監督ならではの熱量が溢れている。しかし、その27年も前に 『三島事件』 を描いた商業映画が・・・しかも外国人監督の手で制作されていたことに驚いてしまう。『ＭＩＳＨＩＭＡ－11月25日・快晴』 という邦題で1985年に公開される予定だったという本作。しかし、今観ても古さは感じない。ドキュメンタリー調の ‘1970年11月25日の出来事’ と、三島（緒形）のモノローグとモノクロでまとめられた ‘幼年期からの物語’ 、そして極彩色の舞台調で映像化された ‘『金閣寺』 『鏡子の家』 『奔馬』 の一部’ 、これら全く異なるフッテージを混ぜ合わせる手法が新鮮だ。しかも三つの要素があるのに映画にまとまりがあるのが素晴らしい。全編ずっと鳴り続く印象の フィリップ・グラス による ミニマル・ミュージック の力も大きいのだろう。静かなシーンでもマグマにように地の底に秘めた力を画面に漲らせていく。30年以上前の作品とは信じられないほどの鮮度だ。そんなわけで、本作が日本未公開とは信じられない、というのが素直な感想だ。非常に豪華な俳優陣・・・個性的で凝った美術・・・スリリングな音楽・・・。興行面ではいまひとつだったようだが批評面ではカンヌ映画祭で最優秀芸術貢献賞を受賞するなど高評価を受けているし、 フランシス・Ｆ・コッポラ や ジョージ・ルーカス が製作総指揮に名を連ね予算をかけた造りであることが画面から感じとれる。しかも、外国人演出の日本を舞台にした映画にありがちな ‘ヘンテコ’ な感じがない（劇中劇のように挿入された三島作品映像化の部分は意図的なので ‘ヘンテコ’ とは意味が違う）。 ポール・シュレイダー監督 は技術系のスタッフを日本人中心で編成し撮影も（スタジオも含めて）日本で行ったという。脚本が 『太陽を盗んだ男（1979）』 などで実績があり知日家でもある監督の実兄 レナード・シュレーダー と チエコ・シュレーダー 夫妻と共同だったことも大きいのだろう。日米合作なのに未公開になった理由を私は知らないが、これだけの仕上がりなら今からでも十分に日本公開する価値がある。むしろ多くの方に観て頂きたい作品だと感じる。なにしろ三島由紀夫とは日本人作家なのだから、まず私達が観るべきなのだ。と、ズラズラ偉そうに書いている私だが・・・三島由紀夫作品を読んでいない（！）・・・という物凄く残念な人間である （すみません・・・今度こそ読みます・・・） 。そんな訳で、作中で引用されている 『金閣寺』 『鏡子の家』 『奔馬』 が適切に引用・映像化されているか判断できないし、それ以外の部分も同様である。しかし、本作を観た海外の観客も似たようなものだったのではないか、と思う。三島由紀夫を知らない （あるいは名前だけしか知らない） 人々に、その半生や作品、そして切り離せない ‘1970年11月25日の出来事’ を紹介したのが本作なのだ。三つのフッテージが交互に現れる為、やや難解で観念的 （抽象的） にも見えるが、たったの2時間で作家の全体像と作品を （つまり魅力を） ‘有機的’ にまとめる・・・という目的のため選ばれた手法なのだ。不満な点は確かにある。それは、やや観念的に流れすぎている・・・とか、 ‘1970年11月25日’ に向かっていく心情や状況があまり描かれていない・・・共に自決した森田必勝についてほぼ触れていない・・・などだ （それは、上記の若松監督作に描かれている） 。しかし繰り返すが上記の目的をたったの 2時間 でまとめたのである。しかも、商業映画という娯楽性を必要とするメディアのなかで、である。これは凄いことだと思う。賞賛すべきだろう。もちろん、その賞賛は1985年の時点でこれだけの所に到達した （又は21世紀になってもこれだけの鮮度を維持している） 、ということも含めてである。

like nothing else i have seen. and in this case, thats a big compliment. not an easy film to describe. ill just say. see it!

３０年以上前に、当時の＜　ビデオテープ版　＞で観た時は、＜　ナレーションが英語　＞で何を言っているのか？ほとんど分からなかった！のですが、この＜　BD版　＞では、＜　ナレーション　＞を三島由紀夫を演じる主演の＜　故・緒形拳さん　＞が担当しています！　むかし日曜日の２２：３０から放送していた「　たけしのここだけの話　」というトーク番組で、その週のゲストとして出演していた緒形拳さんが、「　日本で公開する映画では、ボクがナレーションを担当している！　」というようなことを言っていましたが、＜　本当のこと　＞だったんですね！　この緒形さんの＜　日本語のナレーション　＞を聴くだけでも、このBDは＜　買う価値　＞があります！　他のレビュアーの人たちも書いているように、この『　Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters　』という作品が＜　日本の映画館で公開されることは、これからも９９．９％ない！　＞でしょうから、、、、。　ところで、ボク個人は、この映画を観て、＜　三島由紀夫の美の世界　＞に非常に大きな衝撃を受けた人で、　特に、『　鏡子の家　』のパートは、＜　インパクトが強烈　＞でした！　なので、ビデオを観た次の日には、朝起きてすぐに、近くの本屋さんに、『　鏡子の家　』の文庫本を買いに行きました！ですよ。　また、この映画で興味深い！のは、三島が自決した＜　昭和４５年１１月２５日という１日の出来事　＞を、『　金閣寺　』や『　鏡子の家　』や『　奔馬（ほんば）　』という小説と同じ＜　三島の創作した芸術作品　＞である！と見做している点です。　この映画は、＜　三島の人生を回顧するパート　＞と＜　三島の創作した芸術作品のパート　＞に大きく分かれるのですが、前者は＜　白黒　＞、後者は＜　カラー　＞とハッキリ分かれている！からです。　ちなみに、このBDを購入したのは、大澤真幸（まさち）先生の『　三島由紀夫　ふたつの謎　』という三島由紀夫論を読んだからです。　それで、ビックリしたのは、大澤先生もポール・シュレイダー監督も、＜　三島の割腹自殺の真相　＞を解明するには、『　仮面の告白　』と『　金閣寺　』と『　鏡子の家　』と『　豊饒の海　』が特に重要である！と考えている点です。　このうち、『　仮面の告白　』は、１００頁くらい読んだところで投げ出してしまった！ままの状態なので、あらためて最後まで読み通してみよう！と思っています。　なお、この映画では、ブレイク前の＜　三上博史さん　＞が、楯の会の隊員役として出演されていますが、もう一人、現在名バイプレーヤーとして活躍している＜　徳井優さん　＞も、同じ＜　楯の会の隊員役　＞として出演されているような気がするのですが、＜　引っ越しのサカイのCMのインパクト　＞が強すぎて、いまいち確信が持てませんでした！
