do you have to extend legs to the ground?

The ground is not always level, so the adjustable leg extensions compensate for that. You don't want the entire weight of the steps and occupants to be borne by the rv doorway threshold and, if the ground slopes up from the doorway, you don't want the steps so high above the threshold that you can't close the door.

awill this work on a class A motorhome as a replacement for electrc steps

When the step. Is in you won't be able to exit. Also, you can't put it in from the inside. I would not use it for that purpose.

Which width is this step? I don't see it in the description which includes descriptions of the 26" and the 30" step

I ordered the 30” step but they sent a 26” step 2 different times. Had to purchase at Camping World to get right size.
