with a case like that why would you need to mount vertically? But yes is should work just fine.

No drop off in performance, but the temps are better. :-)

Q: Could it work on an optiplex 980 mt?

Unfortunately even mounted vertically, the gigantic fan/heat sink assembly they put in there would still prevent fitment. I used a pic extension cable and just lowered the gpu down onto a stand setup that allowed a full size card to fit under that monstrosity. Unfortunately it makes lining up with the slots in the back impossible but you can still hook up a dvi or hdmi cable to it by feeding them through a slot opening
